Proposed Study Skills Handbook for Adult Dyspraxics i

Post by Euphena »

Hello Everyone

I would like your thoughts on how would you feel if somebody wrote a study skills or Research methods handbook for dyspraxic adults in higher education. I had many study skills books, but I didn't think they were helpful, because they were written from a non-dyspraxic point of view.

I know we as dyspraxic think and learn diffrerntly, and if someone could write a book to help with our learning disability, it would go a long way to break down tension and anxiety while we pursue our higher education dreams.

I'm seriously thinking of talking to experts to write such a book for us who are in Higher education and have contacted Foundation for Dyspraxia for their advice. I also work in publishing and talked about my idea to a Commissioning Editor at work, who suggested I talk to experts and adults with dyspraxia

I would like to know:

What would you like to see in this book. ie.

A light hearted reference book
Pictures to demonstrate concepts
case studies of successful dyspraxics

Please let me know

I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts

A section on good essay structure would be useful.

Sounds like a great idea to me. I'd say that diagrams to explain ideas is good - as well as illustrated/marked up examples. Happy to share ideas at some point, when I have more time to write. I thought you were doing a PhD not publishing?

Yeah sounds like a really good idea, I would have killed for something like that, maybe a section on other Dyspraxics talking about what helped them?
Given that I'd never even talked to another Dyspraxic when I started Uni I had to kind of make it up as I went along (failing a lot of the time) when I found this place and started reading peoples ideas I found it really helped cos they were just things I would never have thought of.
A good section on time management and organisation would be really good for someone like me, I don't tend to struggle with the academic concepts so much as organising my thoughts, and getting them down in time.
Oh have you considered maybe a website ? ND people tend to learn better using several different mediums not just the printed word and the multimedia nature of the web allows for this .... just a thought.
Oh and one last thing a section on distressing and anxiety control aimed at Dyspraxics might be a good idea I know that's probably the major issue for me.

You've hit on a really good idea good luck :) .

PhilB I currently work part time for an international academic publisher, I noticed my company printed many handbooks for children with dyspraxia, dyslexia and dyscalculia, but currently there is nothing for adults with Dyspraxia. I think there is a real need here and I talked to my commissioning Editor, who suggested I talk our forum group for feedback as well as other Dyspraxia organisations.

I sent an email to the Foundation for Dyspraxia, but they have got back to me I will chase them up next week

Personally I wish I had a study skills booklet and I like Captain Ludd's idea of creating a a website.
I feel very confident a book that or website can be created. I just need to sit down and gather information and advice. I would very grateful if more forum members can post more suggestions.

PhilB I'm currently writing up my proposal to do my PhD and feel ready to carry out research that I truly wanted to do.

I will keep you all posted.
