Hello

Post by bookish »

Just thought I’d say hi to everyone.

My names Ellie

I’m 24 years old studying in London for an MA in Publishing.
I was diagnosed with dyspraxia and dyslexia just before Christmas. The dyspraxia wasn’t a shock, I’ve known about it for a long time and it was mentioned at school but I just never been tested. Dyslexia was a massive shock especially as my reading and writing is fine.

I was told about this forum by my friend Rachael H (if you’re reading this hi!)
I’m really glad to find this, there are a lot of worries and things I’ve wanted to talk about since being diagnosed but have had no one to talk to.

Hi and welcome to the comunity of dyspraxic adults (and other realted nurologicial dysablities ND)).

Its intresting that dyspraxicia isent much of a shock - I guess that can be more ovivious then dyslexicia but unforantaly dyspraxicia has a massive affect compared to dyslexicia and they often go had in hand - like most people on hear i am dyslexic and dyspraxic as well.

Hi again sorry i'm replying a month late :( I haven't had the internet working for a few weeks.

I think that was exactly it. The fact that I have dyspraxia has been obvious because of the physical side to things, Dyslexia was a shock just because my reading and writing have always been fine, my spelling's a bit iffy but not terribly so. It was more to do with poor working memory and the way I order thoughts, the difference between my IQ and the score from the intelligence tests they do when they asses you was huge. But they're all things that are common with dyspraxia as well as dyslexia so I hadn't really considered I had dyslexia.

Hi Ellie

Welcome

I wouldn't describe myself as dyslexic either though it's quite possible it exists at a level too low for it to be very noticeable. If I'm honest there are times when I have confused my letters when reading/writing usually when I'm stressed/in a rush.

Educational/medical people like/want people to fit into neat boxes in order that it will make sense to them. I'd say in many ways that's a Dyspraxic trait but everyone has many differences so categorising is far from foolproof!
