Newly diagnosed with Dyspraxia alongside ADHD - looking for coping tips

Post by Happy-daze »

Hi everyone,

I've recently been diagnosed with Dyspraxia as an adult, and while I'm still processing it all, I have to say it's given me a lot of clarity about struggles I've had throughout my life that never quite made sense before.

I was already diagnosed with ADHD and have found ways to manage that reasonably well. I take medication, use fidget toys, exercise regularly, and generally try to live a healthy lifestyle. Those things have helped a lot with my ADHD symptoms.

However, I'm now realising that some of the difficulties I assumed were related to ADHD may actually be Dyspraxia. Looking back, a lot of things seem to fit such as:

Poor coordination and clumsiness
Frequently dropping or knocking things over
Difficulty with fine motor tasks
Poor sense of direction
Problems judging distances and spatial awareness

I'm curious to know what coping strategies have helped other adults with Dyspraxia.

What has made the biggest difference in your day-to-day life? Are there any tools, apps, routines, therapies, or practical tips that you wish you'd discovered sooner?

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who also have ADHD, as I know there can be quite a bit of overlap between the two conditions.

Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences you'd be willing to share. It's reassuring to finally have an explanation, but I'm also keen to learn how others have adapted and thrived with Dyspraxia. :)

Hi Happy-daze

It's very individual insofar as how we're affected, other co-occurring conditions we might and working out which traits are a result of which conditions. There is a fair amount of crossover of traits even if you don't have the condition(s) they're generally most associated with. Heap on the usual mix of stress and anxiety which themselves can and do mess with our brain chemistry and emotions, more so if we're tired or run down, stressed etc.

If you've not already seen it our Help and Resources listing is here.

I've found learning to be kinder to and more patient with myself has been key. That is definitely easier said than done!
