Diagnosis

Many here appear to be self diagnosed rather tna have an official diagnosis, I just wondered if that was actually true.

I was diagnosed when I was 15 by an occupational therapist. Unfortunately my diagnosis didn't help me at school because my SENCO was awful.

Twice.

Age 13. (1994)
Dr Freda Newcombe (Consultant Neuropsychologist)
Russel-Cairns head-injury Unit, The Radcliffe Infirmary, Department of Neurosurgery
"demonstrated above-average intelligence with impressive recall and reading skills however the disconnect between verbal skills and written performance was significant and might indicate possible dyspraxia"

Age 26 (2007)
Angella Tann (Occupational Therapist) Sheffield Hallam University
Dyspraxia and Developmental Co-ordination Disorder.
"shows a range of difficulties that can be seen to fulfill the criteria for Developmental Co-ordination Disorder and dyspraxia.
Weaknesses demonstrated in "visual discrimination", "spatial relations" and "form constancy"
Strengths demonstrated in: "visual memory", "sequential memory", "figure ground", "visual closure"

I keep photocopies of my diagnosis reports in with my certificates and degree transcripts, so I've ready access to these documents when and if ever I need them.

well kind of 50/50!! I diagnosed myself after watching a programme about it, and going onto the I-Net.

then offically diagnosed when I found the 1986 report in my medical records, so offically diagnosed before my diagnosis, just that the gp wouldn't tell us what was wrong with me, even though a part of me wanted to find out, I was totally withdrawn from the situation, as I didn't like talking about my problems week in, and week out.

and being reminded of my problems on a daily basis by school, and by my parents. but would have liked to find out a lot sooner than I did.

By an occupational therepist at age 13 with DCD Developmental co-ordination disorder and specfic praxis difficulties school didn't do much to support me I just bumbled along I was a student of average ability in all subjects, and just needed a bit of extra support at time and would ask the teachers .

When I was 18 my Geography teacher suggested I might be dyslexic and told me to go see the SENCO. Who refered me to an educational psychologist who told me I was infact severly dyspraxic and moderately dyslexic, and it was quite normal to be both dyslexic and dyspraxic at first I felt angry how could this have happened I was an adult and no one had noticed I was dysexic untill then I have a reading and spelling age which is quite below the average for my age . I guess people must have noticed but no one said anything.

I was never formally diagnosed but it's been clear to all around me that I was dyspraxic from a very early age. I suffer from Hypermobility Syndrome which seems linked to the dyspraxia (or maybe I just dislocate things because I fall over so much!!)

My mum didn't want me 'statemented' at school so she didn't have me diagnosed. My little sister (9) is going the same way!
