Dyspraxic Adults

Hi

I'm late diagnosed AuDHD (Autistic & ADHD) in Berkshire asking for advice on Adult Assessment for Dyspraxia

My Son was diagnosed with Dyspraxia over 10 years ago, and most of my focus then was getting him though school. My shortfall, was I just never really was aware or understood NeuroDiversity at the time or considered myself as ND. Now following my recent diagnoses, my kids (now early 20s), both have said they self-indentify with Autism or ADHD too.

Whilst I arrived at my own understanding and acceptance I was Autistic, it really took a lot more learning about myself and a full year before I realised I was ADHDer too. Similarly, I'm now waking up to the strong possibility that I'm Dyspraxic too - so really would like the certainty of knowing one way or the other - hence wish to get assessed asap.

Grateful for any recommended assessment centres in and around Berkshire that you know or preferably recommend. Does this have to be paid privately , as I'm not aware if Right to Choose (RTC) exists for adult assessments ? please correct if I'm wrong and also if you are aware of approx wait time too

Regrettably I'm not aware of any directory of or recommendation of assessment centres for Dyspraxia. The Dyspraxia Foundation, sadly no-longer in existence, didn't ever have or maintain such a list.

You could speak to https://dyspraxiauk.com/ or equally contact the Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties (PATOSS) https://www.patoss-dyslexia.org/ who whilst they say they are a Dyslexia Charity, very much also cover Dyspraxia.

A private assessment is likely to be expensive £500 - 1,000+). It's worth asking about Right To Choose, though regrettably GPs and Health Trusts have been known to be dismissive or even obstructive and do not seem to comprehend the value certainty brings to people who have struggled all of their lives with ND conditions like Dyspraxia.

I regrettably cannot offer an answer in respect waiting times as regrettably so many NHS trusts have zero provision for Adults seeking Dyspraxia Assessment.

Thanks for your reply - I'll contact DyspraxiaUK next week,

I will ask my GP but will be prepared to pay for this assessment which seems may be the only way from what you said.

I did manage to get my Autism and ADHD done via health insurance - and I think if the wait is too long I'd rather pay, although I'm equally aware both these options are sadly not available to all, and that really does not make me feel good, when I do think everyone should have a chance of an assessment if they wish.

My wife I know used the Dyspraxia Foundation for information when my boy was being assessed and think she went to one or two of their events too. Sad to hear it closed.

Worth looking at whether yout Health Insurance or Employer's Occupational Health Provision might cover assessment.

It is worth it as an investment if it helps you accept your challenges and difficulties are not due to.'character flaws'. Such as you not trying hard enough or applying yourself.

The poor old DF sadly couldn't survive and were forced to cease operations due to insolvency.

DyspraxiaUKgave some really good info - so have GP appointment next week. To see if there is any funding as my Health Insurance seems to cover just Autism, ADHD and Tourettes, but not Dyspraxia.

If I have to self-fund then I would as definately want to know
