Hi and welcome

I've found the best approach is to be kind to and patient with myself. It's not always very easy and I can be a bit too reactionary and impatient for my own good, though I'm less at war with myself nowadays.

Because it presents uniquely and severity often varies from day to day, often dependent on stress levels, it can be hard to explain it in a way that others can readily comprehend.

Sometimes strategies that work well for a while can become redundant overnight due to the imposition of change. Sometimes we try to control things and people around us to try to have some stability/certainty but often that's not realistic or sustainable.

Mine was identified in the latter part of the 80s but I didn't know until my mid 30s. Maybe someone tried to explain it to me back then, but perhaps I wasn't listening and how do you explain it in a readily accessible way? Post 'diagnosis' (hate that word I'm different not broken and needing a cure others perceptions are of course different and equally valid) support is very much here's the confirmation and you're left to work it out for yourself.

Hi all,

I am new here as of today I am in England I have been doing a bit of research over the past few days as I already have verbal dyspraxia and wondered what the difference was between dyspraxia to verbal dyspraxia where I learnt what some of the symptoms were how I was saying yes to some of them for instance.

I have already been told when I was at school that I had poor hand eye coordination to having bad handwriting where my wrist would hurt when writing but this was put down to my hypermobility which I have in my fingers and toes to walking differently to others, I also do find it hard to put my ideas down onto paper to forgetting to do something as I have sort term memory but I can remember conversation from years ago but forget if I brushed my teeth or had my first drink after my breakfast as well saying what I think before thinking it through which comes across as rude but lucky my work colleagues know that I don't mean it.

I am not sure how to enquire about getting a dyspraxia assessment or if these symptoms are related to something else but are similar to dyspraxia I apologise for wasting anyone's time or if this is not the correct forum to use.

Hi Edward/Ed

If you have verbal dyspraxia, it likely significantly increases chances chance you'll have other dyspraxic traits. Similarly quite a few with dyspraxia also have hypermobility.

Being dyspraxic is regrettably often accompanied by a good measure of anxiety and stress which can exacerbate our difficulties with short-term/working memory.

Depending on your employer and their commitment to inclusivity an assessment could be possibly be had via occupational health provision.

It's worth mentioning to your GP as they can advise if there's anything already in your patient notes from when you were younger.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tom,

Thank you for your response.

Interesting I never knew that about dyspraxia that other people with the condition may have hypermobility/verbal dyspraxia as well so I am learning something new already so it might be that I've had dyspraxia but my symptoms might of been missed and put down to hypermobility more. Yeah with verbal dyspraxia the only thing I could say was dah before learning macaton before eventually learning to speak through a speech therapist.

Thank you for the advice as I will get in touch with my GP through the online portal to see if I can be put down for a dyspraxia assessment as I know it's a long wait for one.

You're welcome, Definitely ask your GP but please be aware NHS provision for Adult Assessment is really not good. So do consider whether the occupational health route might be an option.
