It seems like you're better off without him- there's no way I could be in a relationship like that. He was openly mocking your speech, which is a form of bullying (and also emotionally abusive). I got bullied because of my speech when I was at school. I also couldn't believe it when I had people mimicking my speech to my face when I was in an orchestra and at University, as I mistakenly thought that people who were better educated were more likely to be tolerant. T*sspots like that just don't think or care about how hurtful they can be and how humiliated the person they are mocking might feel. When I was on teaching practice, my mentor had a bee in her bonnet about my speech- she kept telling me I should 'talk quicker', ignorantly not considering that I probably couldn't just 'talk quicker'. She refused to be more understanding or to change her attitude towards me, even when I was diagnosed with dyspraxia. With teachers like that woman, God help the kids who have conditions like dyspraxia and dyslexia!

If you want to get help with your speech, it will probably be of more use when you no longer need to wear braces. I would have thought that you could get help with how you pronounce the letter 'r' but I'm not sure about other issues, such as the speed at which you speak. One of the most important things about dyspraxia which ignorant people (like the mentor I mentioned above) don't understand is that dyspraxia is actually largely caused by a problem with the way messages are transmitted from someone's brain to the rest of their body. The neural pathways used are often not the quickest ones, resulting in messages taking longer to reach different parts of the body. It therefore makes a lot of sense that someone with dyspraxia could have slow speech- it's something I'm not sure that speech therapy would change though, as the neural networks in the person's brain are still going to be the same. You could try saying tongue twisters (examples of which you should to able to find online) to help with your articulation- I have actually heard of speech therapists sometimes advising their patients to use these. You could also try recording yourself and then having a go at altering the way you speak based on what you hear- am not sure how well this might work, but it's worth a try! If you want to see a speech therapist, I would have thought that your GP should be able to refer you. I think it would be too expensive to see one privately.

yah i no im better off with out him because found out that he sent naked pics of his ex to everyone including her boss at work so guess hes just a bit of a *****!!!
hate fellas like that who have no respect for women...i dont think he meant to be bullying or emotionally abusive though like we always insult each other messing but my speech is the one thing im really sensitive about so it really got to me..its not the speed thats the problem its pronouncing certain sounds like i talk 2 fast but can slow down if am told(people don't understand words i miss-pronounce when am talking 2 fast)i have problems with muscle movement in my mouth not the speed of messages i think. The occupational therapist said it was something to do with my tongue elevation...your mentor sounds like a real bitch !!!! people like that make me so angry and should not be allowed to teach..when i have have children i just hope to god that if they have dyspraxia aswell that they dont come across teachers like that..i had a few teachers like that who weren't understanding atall..they even told my mum im just plain stupid but luckily i also had some really great ones too....how is your speech now?? did you do anything to improve it??...

My speech has improved a bit- I'm not sure about how much quicker the overall speed is, but I have fewer pauses when I'm talking. The DDAT (Dore) programme seemed to help with that, although I wouldn't recommend anyone to rush off and sign up to it because it's rather expensive. I also wouldn't like to say that going on the Dore programme cures dyspraxia, despite what the company might claim- the biggest benefit for me in going on the programme was that my driving improved. I still sometimes get told that I speak too loudly, but I think this might have something to do with me not being able to tell how loudly I'm talking, possibly due to the ear infections and inner ear problems I had as a kid. I occasionally record my speech, but I'm not sure that I'm motivated enough to do this regularly.

When I was on it (about 8 years ago) it must have cost about £2000 altogether. I was in no position to pay that sort of money myself, so my Dad coughed up. I was on the programme for about 2 years, but some people complete it a lot quicker than that. How much it costs depends on how long you're on it for- on their website, Dore claim that the programme currently costs about £5 per day, but this could add up to a lot of money if you're on it for a long time. I definitely think going on the programme helped with my spatial awareness skills and my ability to pay attention to more than one thing at once- before I went on it, I'd caused several car accidents, so I wouldn't like to think how many more I would probably have caused if I hadn't been on the programme.
