Smoking ban in public places
The British parliament has voted to ban smoking in all pubs, not just those not serving food.

I think this is a tremendous step forward. This might in time make pubs a more attractive prospect. What does everyone else think?

That's a good point actually. Currently smoking is associated with socialising and being sociable. In doing so it legitimises the addiction and even gives it a status of acceptability it certainly doesn't deserve. Once it's outlawed the cold, unfriendly outdoors it may suddenly seem a good deal less appealing, not least to the younger generation who might potentially start.
Does anyone know when the law is likely to come into force?

They are trying to ban restaurant smoking in Chicago. I hope it happens there because that way when I go to Hard Rock Cafe or something and we are trying to sit in the non-smoking, but we are really quite close to the smoking, then there will be no smoking there at all! I don't want cancer!fuzzy wrote:I absolutely agree with the ban![]()

I'm going out tonight Hooray ( doesn't happen that much these days) and we're going to a wetherspoons pub that is no smoking on purpose!! aren't we grown up. that way we wont smell like ashtrays when we get home and best of all I will resist the craving..
I used to smoke in my rebellious youth and then grew up and thought hang on this is disgusting and it's killing me. Unfortunately nicotine has left it's scars on my pysche and when drunk in a pib with a pint in one hand I sometimes crave a fag in the pther. worse still is sometimes I give in and scrounge a roll up. I haven't at all this year yet and I only had about 10 all year last year. I swear sometimes I forget i don't smoke anymore(it's been 10 years) hhorah joys of dyspraxia!
Anyway I'm only avoiding getting back to my essay lol

They are non smoking betting shops, being set up next door to smoking ones now!
The thing with smoking, is that it affects other people. I went to a bar tonight and now I smell of cigerette smoke. I don't want to smoke, so I don't so I don't see why I should breath in other people's. I haven't heard one good arguement, saying why smoking should be allowed.
What people do in their own homes is up to them, but they shouldn't smoke around children.
I will certainly be prepared to visit more pubs where you can see the bar rather than a haze of smoke.
I really can't understand young people starting to smoke. There's nothing cool about it at all and we all know the dangers unlike 50 years ago.

I quite agree David, although lots of people do things I don't understand, lol! Such is human nature.
I was up in bonnie Scotland last week and spent some hours in a pub. On getting back to where I was staying my instinctive reaction was to get all my clothes stuffed away in the dirty laundry bag as having been in a pub I figured they'd stink of cigs. However I was in Scotland where there's already a smoking ban so my clothes didn't smell like an ashtray but were perfectly fine and serviceable for another day. It was great, the pub was well patronised and aside from the lack of the cigarette smoke and pong it was just like any other pub. I am so looking forward to this ban coming into force. In the meantime lots of boozy trips north of the border are called for! lol!
