Day time sleepiness, insomnia and a plethora of other problems

Post by milanonene »

20 year old university student new to the forum suffering from dyspraxia.

I have quite a high sensitivity to daylight, its hurts my eyes and a struggle to fully open my eyes during the day but stuff like sunglasses are really difficult and uncomfortable for me. I think this is because of my dyspraxia but I'm unsure. Additionally, I always find myself to be incredibly tired during the day often succumbing to almost involuntary bouts of sleepiness. I almost always have to nap for 1-3 hours during the day and at night I can sometimes fall asleep around 9 pm but will wake up before midnight without fail if I do. It's incredibly common for me to be awake until 3-4 am regardless of whether it's a weekday or weekend and it's not uncommon for me to be awake till the early hours of the morning 6 am-9 am. This pattern has persisted through the entirety of school and has affected me heavily during my last two years at university. During the night I'm almost entirely lost in my own (very often negative and depressive) thoughts, they run rampant in my head and I feel like I have absolutely no control over them most of the time. This can lead to me getting really frustrated and angry which often leads to me taking this anger and frustration out on myself whether that be mentally or physically and sometimes on other people when I shout for seemingly no reason. I have real difficulty forming routines as well as focusing while studying as my mind will quickly drift towards thought and ideas that are completely irrelevant to the task at hand as I find myself to be an incredibly active thinker. Once my mind starts going it's almost impossible for me to stop the flood of thoughts from taking over and it can be really overwhelming. I can often find myself inexplicably moved to tears of joy or sadness due to the way my mind processes things. Does anyone else suffer from these issues and what are some tips and methods you guys use to manage.

Hi and welcome

No two folk are affected the same and due to the incidence of other co-occurring Neurodivergent conditions Inc ASC ADhD Irlens etc. It is rarely easy more often impossible to say this or that is a 'Dyspraxia thing'.

Please consult an ophthalmologist of other eye specialist re your light sensitivity. It is definitely worth looking at ways of learning to switch off so you can achieve restful sleep. None of the difficulties you have cited are uncommon in the Dyspraxic and Neurodivergent Communities.

Check out the Getting Assessment and Support thread.

With a foot full of bullets I tried to run faster but I just hobbled on to the next disaster.
