Dyspraxic Adults

Hi everyone

I was diagnosed in high school with dyspraxia but nothing official, i am now 28 and have been struggling all my life without support and understanding so finally i have decided to get diagnosed 'officially'.

I have been diagnosed with inattentive add but despite my insistance that the cause of my problems is actually dyspraxia nothing has been done and my gp doesnt even know what it is... i have been reffered to a occupational therapist who is very understanding but can not diagnose me oficially. I have also been reffered to a sleep specialist as i have had insomnia all my life and i am currently on zopiclone 3x the reccomended dose however i have not seen them yet.

Basically i am tired, worn out and frustrated, knowing that something is wrong and not being it not being recognised or able to have proffesional insight into this condition. i looked into going private but it is £685.If anyone could give me advice it would be much appreciated.

The Dyspraxia Foundation's website and helpline which may help you phrase what you need to say to your GP. Unfortunately there is very little provision for adults so he/she only has a limited number of options for referring you and the specialist's office may reject the referral as they might deem they are not best fit so all in all it is horribly frustrating.

It might be worth looking at sources of funding or ways to find some organisation to fund your assessment/diagnosis. Research carefully before committing any money

I think the problem is it is not considered a disease or illness. Many GPs would see it as just "the way you are" and would look to treat the symptoms it causes, such as stress, depression and anxiety.

My college referred me to a council education psychologist, who assessed me and told the college I was dyspraxic. But there's no requirement to leave that circle of you the college and them. It probably won't go on your medical record for a start.

Again, its another example of lack of processes and consideration. And it leaves many of us struggling to be believed, even though Dyspraxia is recognised by the WHO.

Good points! It being a condition it's not something that is treatable per se but they can look for options to ameliorate the effects.

So many struggle in finding the right assistance that can help them feel empowered. It isn't helped by those who are unwilling to accept its existence and say we are neing overdramatic or whatever
