Dyspraxia socialising dilemmas and advice?

Post by Ksenior97 »

#-o
Hello, my name is Katie and I am new on here!

I was just wondering if anyone on here suffers with any of these social challenges, and tips on how I can tackle these?

1.I really struggle with maintaining eye contact with someone.
2. I get awkward when introducing people to each other.
3. I talk to quickly as I worry about stumbling my words, saying something wrong or pausing too long.
4. I find it too much pressure when I am put on the spot in a group conversation.
5. I say "like" "yeah" and "nah" a lot in between conversation to fill pauses.

They are nothing major, but do obviously affect my day to day life! Any help would be greatly appreciated xoxo

Hi Katie and welcome

Dyspraxia does have a tendency to really affect our confidence. It may not be major in grand scheme of things but it's important for you and building your self confidence.

I've always struggled with the eye contact and it takes a lot of perseverance to get better at this.

My strategy would be to let other people to take lead in introducing themselves. Lots of folk dyspraxic/ neurodivergent and Neurotypical alike can struggle with communication and experience the same concerns. That doesn't make it easier but if people judge us for stumbling in our words and/or are impatient with us, they're hardly helping.

If you're interested you'd be welcome to join one of the Monday night Zoom sessions I run snd talk to some other Dyspraxics.
