Relationships

Post by Gracemc96 »

I’m a 23 year old dyspraxia I am currently in my first relationship, however I constantly finding myself feeling overwhelmed with emotion due to my difficulty to progress things. Has anyone experienced this or have any advice kind regards

Hi there and welcome?

I'd say it's something we all have to contend with so please don't beat yourself. You're just as reliant on and influenced by your partners' emotional intelligence and state so getting a balance takes time and effort and an awful lot of worrying. Agree together to take time out and be understanding of each other on things you can't fully agree on.

I'm in my mid forties and still single so you're doing better than I am.

Don't worry we all make them. If you need to you can in theory go back to your original post and correct it to make me look silly for asking the question.

My advice, put as simply as possible, is to learn from every mistake you make and try your best not to repeat them. I'm still with my first girlfriend (12 years together last Thursday), and as madly in love with her I still am, I made some titanic mistakes that nearly blew the whole relationship up (it didn't help that nearly two years of the relationship was a long distance relationship.)

She quickly learned that I was clueless, hopeless and utterly pathetic in the relationship department and gave me enough leeway and understanding that I didn't ruin everything, and as a result I learned, even became a better person for it.

So don't let whatever mistakes you make define your relationship, just work on making it a stronger relationship each time you falter. (But, this is a big one, DON'T ignore warning signs because of this advice. As much as I'd like to say otherwise, not every relationship is meant to last. Whoever you are with needs to value you the way you value them.)

I haven't had a relationship since I was 19 and I'm 35 now. I remember I sometimes found having a relationship exhausting! Also I don't like physical contact so relationships are difficult for me.

Bookworm, if it helps, I don't like being touched much either. But when I fell in love, she became the instant exception to the rule and I wanted (and still want) lots of physical contact with her (hugs etc.)

Considering I don't even like the dog jumping up on me, it's one hell of an exception, so I think your state of mind can change when you have strong feelings for someone. Not that I think you should force it, but if you find yourself in a relationship, don't let your past experiences stop you trying.
