Relationships

Post by melissaxxx »

Hi!

My name is Melissa. I live in Ireland. I'm 22 and I just met a 21 year old boy a couple weeks ago and he informed me that he has mild dyspraxia. I would love any advice anyone could give me.

As I just met the guy I am unsure whether he would be okay with me asking him about it. I have read about it online but it just tells me that everyone is different. Is there anything that I need to know about dyspraxia because I really like the guy and hope that we become something more than friends. How might dyspraxia affect relationships?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Hi Melissa

Go for it. He may find it hard to explain/ put how he's affected into words. Communication can be difficult but if you're both on same wavelength it need not be.

By all means ask but allow him time and space to formulate his answer and accept it may be difficult or impossible for him to answer definitively there and then. I guess that is probably true of lots of people though.

I personally had some issues when I started to date. I was slow to catch up emotionally, so I made some mistakes - other girls flirted with me and I was totally oblivious until my girlfriend blew up about it, as one example. It was a steep learning curve, but we both got through it because we loved each other (and still do).

So my advice - if he acts bizarrely, ask about it. If you are good together, being upfront about any issues he might have is a good idea. Try to be understanding, but at the same time, don't mistake understanding for giving him a free pass for anything inappropriate.

In short, there might (or might not be) more work than in a normal relationship. You'd have to explore it to be sure.
