WORK FOR DOLE

Post by D4m28 »

i just read all about the work for dole idea the brilliant goverment of the uk has come up not! i can see people who cannot work (like me) who suffer from a dyspraxia will get less money and will be assessed by people who don't know what dyspraxia even is. Now i have sat back enough about this problem people need to help us alot more. Myself i was born with dyspraxia and i never had any help in school or with my exams i was always called lazy when i didn't know how to do something and ive taken it all lightly from now untill this stupid dole thing has come out. i just want people who do have dyspraxia bad to fight against the goverment for a better life for us not where someones forcing us doing things we can't do or understand i suffer from anger problems, my balance i forget stuff all of the time i need my gf there alot of the times to help me out as i think i am not good enough for anythng or to do something (whatever it is). Anyway im hoping this isn't all garbage to people i just talk about different subjects very quickly and at the age of 25 nearly 26 im losing myself more and more everyday from having dyspraxia
please i hope someone listens to me

Hi Dean,

I am sorry but I have to disagree, just because you are dyspraxic does not mean you are not able to work. Plenty of dyspraxics lead successful professional careers. Of course you may not be the next David Beckham or able to make split second decisions as a stock broker, but there are plenty of opportunities out there you just need to find something you like. Also the key thing is to keep on trying and make sure you practise for your interview.

I was biting my tongue after reading that post, but since the Admin of the board has posted, I must add my agreement to his post.

I would also highlight the number of students and graduates who are members of this board.

Did you know that you had dyspraxia when you were at school, or when was it discovered?

Ok pooky thanks for your post but it wasn't like that for me it was very different no one helped me out i was called lazy when i tried my absolute best on my GCSE'S and didn't know i even had dyspraxia untill i went to college where i was assessed because my tutor saw problems with me and saw i wasnt coping too well. So after the assessment i found out i had a disability called Dyspraxia which turned my life upside down because people think your dumb and not faster than them which i did think also, on top of that i had a guy in a class hang himself from something i don't know and then i just thought i can't handle this i need to leave so i left college. After that i had the jobcentre on my back saying i couldn't shave and look presentable and it upset me so much it stopped me going i have a lot of social problems ontop of other things and i get nervous so when someone tells you stuff like that you get pushed back. I live now in Wales which 2 years ago i did a ECDL Course which i wanted to do to prove i could do something and i passed, Then i did a Maths and English course which i passed also but i was very nervous. So after i had all this i went to talk to people who would help me out 2 places actually Remploy and Shaw trust. Now remploy the guy from there told me straight i wouldn't be able to get a job without qualifications and so he didn't even help me find ways to learn. Then Shaw trust they only rang 8 weeks it took for them to ring me and i wasn't impressed and waiting forever. So after all this ive tried ringing jobs and what do you think there attitude is to me working for them let me quote some of the lines i have been told. One from a factory place saying so what does your disability do? (DO?) im sure she meant what is it like or something but the minute i told her she was very rude and sounded like she couldn't care less so i asked for a interview or what i have to do and she said sorry you need experience but before she said they teach you so she was a lying so so. then some other jobs i have rung up for as i live in a area where i cannot get on a bus on my own i do not remember stuff and i forget alot the people on the phones don't really want to employ me because i have these problems and you may say its not all like that but i haven't seen any different approach with them so i will think that this country is very very ignorant when it comes to people who have disablities and i know this for a fact being one of them

I think if you can prove you cannot work that it doesnt change the amount you get, I cannot work due to my epilepsy as its STILL not under control, I am in and out of hospital every 5 minutes, so I know, as do my doctors, that it'd be near impossible for me atm to be able to work the required hours etc... and anyway tell me who would employ somebody who could have a seizure 2 minutes into the working day then need to sleep for 6 hours before being capable of doing much of anything.

With alot of people that arent working its more of the mindset holding them back, with the new system of focussing more on what a person can do rather than what they cant should make a difference to the entire system.

Dean, I don't mean to sound cruel, so please forgive me if it comes across that way, but most of us here have had/continue to have a hard time due to dyspraxia, but we get on with life and work/college/uni.

From reading your posts I don't think at the moment you can see past your dyspraxia diagnosis. You need to see past this so you can get on with your life. For me it was a relief to have an explantion as to why I was the way I was (and I only discovered the explanation recently), but it didn't stop me doing the things I did before, if anything it made me more determined (a positive trait of dyspraxia).

I think it would be useful if you saw a Disability Employment Adviser at your local job centre. They should be able to put you on a program so you can get a supported work placement. That way you can see what sort of work you may be able to do. I have just started a work placement at my local library and so far it is going very well.

No, I don't know you, but then again you don't know me either. Yes I am lucky enough to have a job, but I had to fight hard for the job I am currently in (only been in it a few weeks). I wouldn't wish my last year on you, with bullying, people making me out to be thick and incapable, and eventually being sacked from a promoted post. I fought it though with the help of the Union and eventually got another post at the promoted grade in another office, and am loving it - its like night and day.

So to you D4m28 I say fight for your rights, and I don't mean your right to benefit, I mean your right to work :)

They have Work for the Dole here in Australia. It gets the dole bludgers off their asses and doing something constructive with their days. Here, if you have a disability and can work, you're usually placed with a job finding agency that specialises in people with disabilities, you are then exempt from Work for the Dole as you're participating in another program.
I get Disability Pension as I'm not able to work.

Hi Dean - welcome to the forum, this is a grate resourse so use it well.

I do understnad your situation - I have struggled a lot with mental helth issues (ralated to dyspraxicia) as well as dealing with dyspraxicia etc. Allthough the issues and can get worse, I am on my way up and am doing volentery work which is supportive. I suggest this is somthing you try to do as well as applying for dysablitie living allowance - the CAB / advocasy service can help you with this so don't try it alone.
The allowance gives you money to help you live with your dysablitie better and helps you have money you need for things to help you cope day to day.

I understand that you may not be able to undertake paid work but volentering is somthing that could really help - its a lot more flexabale then paid work, often un biast and jugmental and it helps you get experance that you can use when you are ready to move on.

Also services like coulceling and ocupational thearpy could really help - talk to your GP about this.
