Dyspraxia Co-existing with other conditions

Post by sheppeyescapee »

Copied over from my post on the Yahoo group.

"Well at the beginning of September I was diagnosed with dyslexai and
dyspraxia by the ed psych. Since then I started university and have
been running into quite a few probelms, to the extent that the
lecturers have been noticing. They flagged up a bunch of concerns
with the disability service.

I've been told that the dyspraxia and dyslexia dx might not be
everything and that dyspraxia often co-exists with other conditions
like AS. All I know is that I'm not really coping that well at the
moment.

Is it really a regular thing that dyspraxia co-exists with other
conditions or are the people at the uni talking rubbish?"

There is a high co-morbid rate with Dyspraxia. Aspergers syndrome is one of many conditions which can occur, dyslexia being the most common to co-occur alongside dyspraxia. Remember Dyspraxia its self is an almagulation of difficulties and you should bear in mind that people are affected in diffrent ways. Your dyspraxia may be diffrent from mine although the basis is the same. Social difficulties can be part of dyspraxia (aspergers like symptoms without being aspergers)

I recomend going to YouTube and typing in "dyspraxia" and have a look at some of the personal stories posted.

Hope this was of help

That's Non-Verbal Learning Disorder, a condition where a person has the social difficulties found in Aspergers (difficulty understanding non-verbal communication etc) combined with spatial and practical difficulties found in conditions like dyspraxia and dyscalculia. Most NLDs meet the criteria for dyspraxia/dyscalculia but not all dyspraxics/dycalculics have NLD. NLD is more commonly recognised in America than it is elsewhere in the world, where it tends to be bunched in with dyspraxia.

Whether or not they have the neurological social difficulties associated with AS/NLD, dyspraxics often suffer from psychological social difficulties like stress and lack of confidence, due to the other practical and neurological problems associated with the condition. The same goes for people with dyslexia etc. I'm dyspraxic - my friends' sister has dyslexia and we have quite similar psychological issues even though our conditions affect us to different degrees and in opposite ways.

Yeah I've been told I have NLD, Dyspraxia and SPI (Spacial Perception Impairment).

And Rasin Girl, alot of what you said fits in with the way I am. My thought and action processors are up the creek and I also bang into just about anything if I'm not paying attention. Most of the time I bang into my bunkbed or a dog lol.

Mild AS goes with my dyspraxia, though apparently they arent ruling anything out. Not sure what they meant by that...

as for me, then I was lucky just to find out about being diagnosed dyspraxic, but not sure how many other things I have been diagnosed with, and not told about.

but do suffer badly with meeting new people, body language, and feeling like a zombie in a room of total strangers, and changes in plans at last minute, but I wouldn't say to the extent as my cousin who has been diagnosed with Aspergers. as he is, if he can't stay in one place, then he wants to be taken home, or like we went to the pub with my Australian cousins, and he was asking when can he go home, before some of our group had been served food.

I go out, and enjoy myself while I am out, but also really prefere being home, as in letting my hair down, and chilling, to the point that Social services seem to class as depression.

After much arguing between CMHT and LDT they decided that they were at a dead end. Being referred again to CMHT who will then refer me to the maudsley. I wonder how long all that will take considering I have to see triage person to be referred to CMHT who then refer to the maudsley. ](*,)

Great to see non verbal learning disorder get a mention!!!

I was diagnosed with it earlier this year and so few people have even heard of it let alone know anything about it!

To answer the original question, yes, dyspraxia can co-exist with AS but, as other people have said, it affects different people in different ways. I'm sorry you're not coping well and I really hope that the disability service can help you
