35 years old Dispraxic here - I didn't think it was a big deal. Turns pretty much everything in my entire life has been effected and only recently I realised this, so I googled Dyspraxia forum today and here I am :)

Hi Rufus

Welcome to the Forum

I liken it to living with a mischievous goblin alter ego. He likes to run amok and spoil my day but mostly I manage to keep him on a short leash.

Welcome Rufus, I agree with you- pretty much everything is affected by my dyspraxia, but I do not think all the effects are bad - I have come to think the folks we live with have it just as difficult and folks we meet, may not be able to understand us, so many avoid without saying anything out of politeness. I have almost (I forgot what comes next) as I took a quick phone call after writing "almost" back there)

I hope you can find what information you need here and if not please post about it, hopefully you will get helpful responses.

That's really kind thank you for the warm welcome Tom :) I was a very bad alcoholic for well over a decade (sober 16 months now!) , something which when researching and through counselling was a way to cope/escape the not being able to live with Dispraxia or the lack of emotional control i currently have as a result of my anger, anxiety and frustration. I am absolutely gobsmacked at the sheer number of effects it has and identify with a great many of them so am really glad to have found this forum. I was diagnosed as a child but never received any assistance as we moved to a different part of the country with naff healthcare just afterwards, leaving me confused and frustrated for the majority of my life. I am busy next few days but i look forward to learning as much as i can, being a part of the community, making some new friends and hopefully adding some fresh ideas and experiences to the mix; particularly but not limited to Dispraxics who have had a history of Addiction and/or those who struggle with coping with impulses and intense emotions.
I am excited to be here! Thanks so much Tom, I look forward to getting to know your experiences better :)

I appreciate you sharing your experience Andrew and thank you very much for the lovely welcome and indulging me in the tragic comedy that is dispraxic poor memory, I share your pain and am glad we can joke about it safely here.
I know I'm not alone, even less so now i have found this forum and it seems to be pretty active from what I can tell so far. I'll be away for a few days working but look forward to being more involved and learning and reading about everyone's personal experiences here and perhaps share some ideas with everyone, I am a lover of Philosophical thinking, NLP and like many of us am very deeply (and often unctrontrollably) connected with my emotions and the emotions of others, although i am definitely not a strong typer! haha.
Many many thanks for the welcome again. Have a lovely week i look forward to chatting with you again, Andrew.

Thank you Rufus - my brain hurts right now - I have lost count of the number of saucepans I have boiled dry today trying to cook up some Rhubarb that arrived past its best time for use - it is definitely three but I burned the pan I was cleaning with soda so that is an extra one. As for addiction - I am sure a lot of dyspraxics and other neuro diverse folk mask their disability - not intentionally with addiction - the addiction obviously needs confronting but in recovery the neuro disability is likely to be prominent. I am sort of friend of Bill's as my recovery involves different issues to his but I am back at the beginning after discovering recovery from addiction is possible for me in 1994 - still I only need to manage today.

Hey andrew! Ironically rhubarb is supposed to be a natural cleaner that can help remove stains hahaha. A nice long piping hot soak and mayne some bicarb and vinegar can help get that crust off. Dont throw them away! Lol.
I dont know who Bill is or how he is relevant; im not quite sure how to proccess that info sorry Andrew! Haha.
Yes definitely in my 15 month abstenance is when Dispraxia has become most prominent- so much so it feels like im an entirely different person as i dont recall what i was like prior to alcoholism; but i am slowly coming to terms with it all :) thanks for sharing mate and good luck with the pans! Lol.

Hello all I found out about this site from https://forum.scope.org.uk/
My son was diagnosed with Cerebral palsy at birth and I have just found out it is Dyspraxia 36 years later, I am hoping to learn more about my son's condition as I am not sure if it is the same

Hi Razr and Welcome.

Dyspraxia and CP.are distinct conditions with some overlap of impact and difficulties. I do wonder if it's possibly the case that if you didn't meet diagnostic threshold for CP then it you might then fall within less well defined diagnostic criteria for dyspraxia (AKA DCD).
