Link between dyspraxia and addiction
Hello, can anyone provide me with any more resources on the link between dyspraxia and addiction? On this link [url][https://dyspraxiafoundation.org.uk/dysp ... dults//url] it states in the dyspraxia symptoms Prone to... compulsions and addictive behaviour. However I can not find any other articles anywhere else where this link is discussed?
Re: Link between dyspraxia and addiction
It's a bullet point rather than a URL link and gives some examples of potential behaviours that some one with Dyspraxia might exhibit.
Such behaviour does not specifically' refer to a higher incidence of substance abuse though I can appreciate that some might choose to 'self-medicate'.
I think that some of us find measure of comfort in routines and/or repetitive activities that might be seen as a little odd to some. Equally there's a higher risk/incidence of mental health difficulties.

I had a big problem with substance abuse for about 5 years. I feel that was more related to me self medicating my ADD with amphetamines and an inherent interest in learning about pharmacology via experimentation though.

Is there such an addiction?
Re: Link between dyspraxia and addiction
It's been a while since your post, but I wanted to offer some insight.
I've never heard of a link between dyspraxia and addiction, but it's an interesting topic. From what I understand, dyspraxia can affect coordination and movement, which might make certain activities, like using substances, more challenging.
I think it's important to remember that everyone is different, and just because someone has dyspraxia doesn't mean they're more likely to develop an addiction. It's all about how you manage and cope with your challenges. If you're struggling with addiction or know someone who is, it might be a good idea to reach out for help. There are hotlines like the substance abuse hotline michigan that can offer support and resources.

Re: Link between dyspraxia and addiction
I am dyspraxic and an addict and have made quite a study from a personal point of view.
It seems to me that succumbing to any addiction changes how I feel and for a brief time I lose my sense of failure which I am so aware of when I consider how behave with dyspraxia.
I suspect that addiction brings a temporary relief, but a permanent life problem and I think we are disproportionately more likely to be addicts than others.
Now the Dyspraxia Foundation has folded we need each other more than ever to learn and minimise the harms of our conditions.

Re: Link between dyspraxia and addiction
As a former alcoholic 20 to 28 units per night for 10 years- i realised in my sobriety i drank to avoid dealing with dispraxia because i didnt know how to. The world and its people where too hard to face and i lived with guilt, shame and being misunderstood up until 16 months ago.
This is where my addiction correlated with my Dispraxia in a nutshell. Abusing to avoid.
With councelling, research, minfullness, prescribed medication, routine, self compassion, a strong but managable social circle and fortifying my mind with NLP ,as well as other techniques; I am now starting to overcome the hurdles of my dispraxia.
My experiences and healthier coping mechanisms are naturally bespoke to my needs- i found what works for me and have benefitted from asking for help as well as helping myself. This forum is also proving beneficial as I dont feel so much like an alien to my thoughta and emotions anymore.
Thank you for asking, reading and sharing.

Re: Link between dyspraxia and addiction
I am looking to write a book based on substance abuse, dispraxia and the insecure divide between alcoholics and casual (for lack of a better word- HEALTHIER) drinkers.Andrew_S_Hatton wrote: ↑Thu May 02, 2024 7:01 pm I am dyspraxic and an addict and have made quite a study from a personal point of view.

Its not something i am rushing but would you be open to. Private discussion of your experiences at some point?
I am very curious to learn more about the correlations, I could have used a book like that many years ago.
Have a great day

Rufus.

Re: Link between dyspraxia and addiction
Whilst I've managed to avoid becoming dependent on alcohol, I do know and know of people who've misused alcohol and other substances.
We should not feel shame or guilt for being dyspraxic but too many find themselves in that space.
A friend of mine found a number of people in her AA Group had similar experiences/suspicions.
Really glad you're finding better ways to cope.
