Expectant dad here :)

Post by dirtydave91 »

Hi guys

I'm 24 and expecting my first child :) I have been diagnosed as having dyspraxia since I was 7 but I've never really noticed it. That was until recently ( past few years) when trying to gain independence. I also have arthritis as a result and can struggle with mobility at times. I have had a look around but cannot see any posts anywhere about becoming a parent with the condition. It always brings up advice for parents with children that have it.

I was wondering if there was a resource for this probably fairly common position...

Thanks
Darren

Hi Darren and welcome

I'm not sure that arthritis is always a coexisting condition but people are affected differently and we're all unique. I'm afraid I can't speak from personal experience but appreciate that being a parent is a daunting challenge and the prospect of having to look after a child will no doubt cause anyone to question how/whether they will cope with the responsibilities. What aspects of being a dad are you specifically concerned about and why?

There have been some posts about parenthood by members with children. A lot of resources for people with dyspraxia are aimed at children/young adults and/or their worried parents. As adults we're in many ways left to get on as best we can, though awareness is improving it does seem to be hard, often nigh impossible to access specific dyspraxia related support.

There are some posts from people here who are parents and hopefully someone who knows first hand about being a parent will also respond to your post. I'd also suggest you search the forum for various keywords and see if there are any previous discussions that cover this topic and might be useful/informative.
