Typing

Post by Catwoman42 »

I type a lot at work and have an ergonomic keyboard (this was the result of an occupational health recommendation) The keyboard is split down the middle and both sides are at 45 degree angles The problem is that I am such a heavy handed typist that I wear the keys away, particularly on the left hand side I have tried coating the keys with clear nail varnish to prevent this happening, but I go through keyboards at a great rate. It doesn't help that I still don't know the keyboard off by heart Any suggestions? I thought about a touch typing course, but the thought of it scares me

Hi

I was put through a touch typing course when I was 16 or so. in theory I think they were hoping it might help me with exams though I hand wrote all my exam papers. I guess it has helped a bit though I do still look at my fingers rather than the screen and I tend to use favour just two fingers rather than all nine or ten. I'm not sure it guarantees you will necessarily stop pounding your ergonomic keyboards to death, though I suppose if you learn to do it properly your fingers will stay closer to the keyboard so you won't hit the keys from such a great height.

As for the fear? is it that you fear being taught in a group? You could try an electronic typing tutor though some one to one sessions might be useful for mastering using the right fingers for the right keys. Ideally get used to using them on your own keyboard.

All the best
