what's everyones opinion on home schooling?

Post by misfit »

I want to home school my daughter. She is 4 soon to be 5. She hasn't got Dyspraxia or any learning differculties like me, but I don't really like the schools or the teachers. Never have agreed very much with the schools way of teaching either. What's everyones opinion on home schooling?

I think you need to have a clear plan.

a. How will you ensure she gets the opportunity to take exams and gain recognised qualifications?
b. How will you ensure she gets the opportunity to mix with other children and have a comparable experience?
c. Do you have friends who have home schooled their children or done any research into how it works?
d. How you would fund it? - I guess you save on uniform but what about points a and b?
e. Are you required to prove anything to your local education authority?
f. Will you miss out on not getting the benefit of taxes you still have to pay to the government/your local authority?

I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just saying be prepared and able to clearly justify how you will make it work.

If she is fully capable of attending school, I see no reason for her not to.

The school's method may or may not be subpar to your method of teaching, but sometimes learning through social interaction amongst one's own peer group is equally as important.

In order to progress in this world, you must have some level of sophistication.

I feel my communication skills and vocabulary are limited due to having been homeschooled.

I can't stress this enough: it's EXTREMELY difficult to develop friendships outside of school.

I'm just speaking from personal experience.
