Dyspraxic Adults

I'm in my thirties and have never been able to swallow tablets. When people are baffled by this I describe it as not knowing how to do it and it always seems like I have an incorrect reflex action which closes my throat.

Does anyone else have this problem? It always shocks people as they say it's such a simple thing to do. I have also been asked if I can 'take tablets like grown up people yet? )

I used to struggle big time when I was younger, but not so much today.

Some tablets are still difficult to swallow, I try to go for coated caplets if possible.

Yeah, I can't do it either. My body is like, plastic? Nope. As disgusting as they are, soluble aspirins I stick with.

Thank goodness I've managed to solve that one.

There are some pain relief tablets that you can dissolve on your tongue, they actually taste nice as well.

I used to be really bad when I was younger and couldn't take capsules/antibiotics , I used to empty the powder that was inside the capsule and mix it with milk on a spoon it looked and smelt like a tom cat and it was horrible,but as I got older I became better. My son is in his twenties and he still has terrible trouble, he has to have liquid calpol if he needs paracetamol and liquid form of antbiotics dont know what would happen if he had to take medication that was only in tablet form as its a nightmare.Its something to do with the gag reflex which often affects some dyspraxics.

My choices for pain relief are Calpol or Ibruprofen as they don't taste so bad. If there is nothing else I will chew paracetamol but would prefer not to as it's so disgusting. I've never found a soluble tablet I like either.

The 'gag reflex' is a good way of explaining it. That's how it feels to me.

When I was a child and in my early teens, I couldnt swallow tablets at all and had to use dissolvable tablets which was absolutely horrible and I so didnt like it. I just couldnt make sense of it as its apparently a very easy thing to do in other people's eyes, especially as I didnt know at that time I was even dyspraxic. It was only a few years ago, I finally was able to swallow tablets, dont know how it happened, one day I had to take tablets for a painful headache and I decided to take a paracetamol tablet and give it a go of swallowing it with a glas sof water and luckily it went down my throat with no problem at all, so bizzare indeed, and from then on, was able to swallow tablets with no problem whatsoever.
