being agressive / 'tantrums' / meltdown as teen to adult

Post by Ryallke »

Hello again,

Just reading the forums and one major issue my son has which i understand is a symptom of dyspraxia is tantrums in young children.....i read a part on dyspraxia foundation about tantrums with teenagers and wondered in day to day life how this effects people here in teens to adult hood. I can just about support/control him now as he is 5 but wearing 8-9 clothes so hes a tall kid already. It scares me to think if he has a 'tantrum' or meltdown as i call it in public/school etc at the age of 15/16 being a big lad the way it would be seen or if he could end up in trouble with the law. Just wondered if theres a different technique that may help or if any or many of you experience this still or how you deal with it really. Basically when he has a meltdown now i cant touch him because it makes him worse so i kneel to his level and wait for him to calm, can take 15-30 mins sometimes (not good when snowing or raining) and i just calmly ask what he wants or what has upset him, there are times i know like he doesnt like snow/wind/rain because he can 'feel it'. I also know that after hes calmed down its because hes tired or his legs ache and i end up carrying him on my shoulders the rest of the way home but sometimes its something he cant explain why and i cant get anything out of him really.

Yes the simpton is 'ushlie' outgrown but with some cases it isent - for example i have experances of having a sudden meltdown / axianty attack, getting verry stresed sudnely.
Its worse when your older as yes it can / has the potenchal to get you involved with the law in the wrong way, cause axidents, hurt your self or others, self harm etc.

Often 'tantrums' arnt really the word when your older but its more about infomation overload and getting confused or anxious. - This is more a mental helth thing raver then dyspraxicia but the two are verry much realted. dyspraxicis are prone to mental helth issues - particulie axianty and depreshion.

If there is a overlaping ADHD then this can cause this as well as this is commen with people with ADHD.
