Mouth not connected to brain
Does anyone have any tips on how to get my mouth to listen to my brain? I keep using words which have nothing to do with what I'm saying eg: I'll hang these fish on the bandaid (meant to say bamboo!!!) I was also going to BBQ the children the other day, might lose my job if I do that! I do this all the time and feel like such an idiot.

I think sometimes you lose focus on what you're saying. Maybe just try to relax a bit more while you talk?

I know the problem myself. Have you tried any type of speech therapy as they may have some ideas/activities that will work on this area. I've had problems with physical formation of words, a stammer and struggles with pronunciation of words. As have been mentioned, calming down if relevant will help, but it is just as important to keep calm and don't let the problems get to you as that will only make matters worse. I find its good practice to get into the habit of slower speaking, which is hard if you are like me or any of my family! Obviously, it's hard to say as I don't know you personally and everyone is different. If I were you I would try to read aloud in private and hope that over-time it may improve, ie practicing processing the words and saying them aloud. It may not work but it may help!

This happens to me a lot. Most of the time it is because I am really stressed with university and I have worked really hard so my brain is over thinking and I end up not making sense. I normally just correct myself, and try and slow down what I am saying and thinking.

I'm glad i'm not the only one! I find if i slow down and think of things before I say them i'm ok. but when i'm really tired or stressed or just dont think first it comes out wrong. not always but sometimes

I have real issues with this and genralie not thinking before I talk hears what I mean http://www.dyspraxicadults.org.uk/forum ... 950#p15950
My ocupational thearpest has suggested about writing things down about what you want to say and then say it - that way you have got this to guid you and it can be edited before you talk.
I also have a t'shirt which i use to put in my mouth if I find that I am running away with what I am saying or somone tells me to shut up.

Thanks everyone! I have found that know I know why I'm having problems, I remember to slow down and I don't have as many hassles. As for speech therapy, the nearest one is 2hrs away, so I'm going to see how I go. I am also planning what I want to say if I have the opportunity, which helps. I'm also more conscious of prattling on now so I stop myself if I can! The people I work with think it's cos I have chronic fatigue and just laugh at me (nicely!) Same with constantly crashing into furniture!!

I sometimes have problems like that but it seems to magnify it's self by 100 if I'm stressed. I have a perfect example from today as well, I was at the local softplay area with my children when a complete arsehole turned up with his kids who proceeded to bully the other children. I politely asked him if he could keep a better eye on his kids and was told to F*** off, he then called them over and praised them (poor kids, god only knows how they'll turn out with a father like that) which of course set me right off and I ended up in an argument with him (stupid, I know but I can't stand bully's and to see this father encourage it just made my blood boil). Thankfully some of the other parents backed me up and he soon left but I was left raging and could hardly speak for the next couple of hours, everytime I tried to say something most of it made no sense whatsoever.

My advice to you is just to relax, it happens with me a lot and that because I have very difficult job that make me stay up late at night..Tim G wrote:I have real issues with this and genralie not thinking before I talk hears what I mean http://www.dyspraxicadults.org.uk/forum ... 950#p15950buy viagra

I find that when I get really frustrated, tracing the words out in the air is extremely helpful. You should give it a shot.

I get that also , if I am overwhelmed or in a group of people I fumble or mix up words and I feel embraced, the worse is when u noticed you are doing it but can't help it and a heat flash comes over you then it's so hard to come down or not feel overwhelmed.
I tend to go off topic at times also on conversations with people , it drive me nuts cuz they are trying to see your point or view or even trying to get to know u and it appears randomly. That's why I have social anxiety I figure or one of the reasons.
I know I'm smart and I know there is a wiked mind up there but I need to some how learn how to control it but then again when the next day comes I will just be in square one again . It's like my speach functions have a short memory on its own , cuz my brain knows what to say correctly but entrance point to get it out is not there or half there or confused.
