Bodybuilder

Post by mike! »

I just found myself wondering do any other dyspraxics on this page find lifting wieghts a big thrill such as i do? I lift wieghts every day and am always researching new supplements and prohormones to take to get me bigger. Bodybuilding is one of the few things that is not disadvantageous because i have dyspraxia. Its an outlet to all my bad days i have, plus success is based primarily on hard work. I am very competive and full of testosterone but i feel that any sport or activity i do is too challenging. In bodybuilding you dont need any sense of coordination or brain power (plus socializing is not involved). Anyway let me know if anyone feels the way i do or has any other hobbies or interests that are not affected by dyspraxia. THANKS :P

Bodybulding - thats cool, havent realy heard of many dyspraxicis do that.
My hobbies are lava lamps - coelcting, remaking, reparing etc. About a year ago I was studding and working in the entertainment industury as a lighting tecnichan, programmer etc so I guess thats my other intrest. I dont do much profeshnal lighting at the minuet other then lava lamps etc.

I also do odd diy and gardening jobs around the house and other places and I quite like walking etc.

thanks, those hobbies are some that i would like to try as well. Repairing- what kind of things do you repair?

ive always wanted to learn how to fix cars or pipes things around the house etc but my counselor suggested against putting too much time into these things because spatially i wouldnt be good at them.

Reparing - genral DIY and electrial repares etc (if i can fix it that is) and also repares on lava lamps - i.e. getting them restored, flowing again etc.

Although your counceler advised aensed that kind of work I would suggest doing it - you seam like you would be compentent but just start with somthing easy and see how it goes but be aware (or try to) that your being safe.
If it works then it gives you somthing to do and could help your self-esteem.

I'm surprised that you're a bodybuilder because I thought upper body strength was a problem for us? or maybe that's just an excuse I use.... :D

I'm really competitive also although I don't really play sports. I guess I'm more into intellectual rather than physical pursuits.

Well I dont actually compete on stage or anything but I do what I can. The upper body strength may have been little weaker than the norm when i first started lifting but sticking though it over the years has shown me huge improvements.

and thats good for you. :) ive found that it helps to find something i can use to vent (something i dont completly suck at anyway)

You are right, dyspraxia has in no way affected me working out and gaining muscle. That's what i really love.

I think i,was lucky as ive always had quite a lot of strength, maybe genetics i suppose.

I would really reccomend bodybuilding or at least general working out to anyone on here.

Good thread :)

I do a sign language course that helps me with hand co ordination and I am also a beaver leader and in ventures. Ventures also helps with my organisational skills and I enjoy it. You go on hikes camp out and learn how to build and cook on open fires :)

I used to use dumbells quite regularly. As my upper body strength is very low.. So a bit of exercise with weight helped improve my strength and stamina. Alas I haven't done it for a while because I'm suffering from more muscel knots and spasam than you can shake a stick at. I can't say the weights caused this, it's as likely that life stress is the real culprit but poor posture and technique probably played some part as well.

It's a shame because upper body strength and stamina is very useful in my hobby, go-karting. I'm trying to sort myself out by managing my stress (easier said than done) taking massage therapy and improving my diet (again easier said than done)

I'd really like to get back to a stage where I feel comfortable enough to regain a real routine of exercise as being in constant discomfort and feeling unfit is really quite depressing.

I'm not very competitive though, so I'm not driven or motivated to beat someone else. Don't get me wrong I like the buzz of winning something as much as the next man, but I don't take the competition to heart as it's simply not that important to me. I measure my performance against my own expectation not that of a opponent. It means that as long as I've done something to my ability or slightly above... Then the score simply doesn't matter. For example in my hobby of go-karting, if I find myself amongst talented regulars and I end up slowest and last then it doesn't matter as long as I've at least performed to my own level, if I've learnt something and improvemed then even better but there's no point in being despondent about losing to competition way above my level.

On the flip-side, if I haven't played to my ability then I'll probably be quite annoyed. For example in a game of Pool, again the result doesn't matter, just so long as when at the table I play to my ability. If for some reason I'm not concentrating, using a poor stance, not cuing well, missing easy shots then win or lose I'm not happy because I'm not using my ability.
