Hi guys,
After finding this website and having a browse around, I thought i'd register and say hello.
So yeah, hello! I'm Wilf and I'm 22. I was diagnosed with dyspraxia offcially at 19 but we knew there was a problem from about the start of my GCSEs, even if the school refused to believe I was anything but lazy.
It took me going to college after dropping out of sixth form to get my difficulties assessed. I was diagnosed with mild dyspraxia. I'm still not quite sure what that means and from my own research I know that dyspraxia can cause so many real life problems that i'm not sure what weaknesses i have can be put down to it or not.
I'm sure many people who were diagnosed later on in life have similar confusion and all I know is that I've never had the questions about whether I can lead a normal life or not in my mind.
I'm at university now studying Film and Media with production and absolutely love it, perhaps my organisation has been my weakest skill this year. The level of independence I have can mean it's often hard to get out of bed and do anything but I huess we all have our own demons to fight against.
Thats not to say i'm a totally demotivated and apathetic student though. If anything, I'm pretty dedicated to the whole student experience and beyond. I got involved with student unions at my college and also at a national level (thanks the the amazing role model I had of the national SWD offcer (now DS officer) who empowered me to see anything is possible.
Next year I'm the Disabled Students' Officer for my Student Union and have really come here because people ask me about dyspraxia and I always struglle to define it properly.
Beyond that, I know my university does an amazing job with its learners who have support needs but I just wanted to get some feed back from here about what else they could be doing.
Beyond that, my main interests are computer games, partying, reading, loads of music (fave band atm: Boards Of Canada), roleplaying games, swimming, SCUBA, mountaineering and skydiving.
Nice to meet you all!
Wilf

Hello, I'm Wilf
"A truth that's told with bad intent, beats all the lies you can invent" William Blake
Welcome Wilf!
The story of your school thinking your lazy and refusing to believe there's a deeper problem is a problem encountered by a good few people here. However I'm glad that you've battled through it and got to Uni where you seem to be doing fine things. A SU post is certainly to be proud of - well done on that one!
Lots of varied interests too, although I must say many rather more physically demanding than I would normally think of trying, good on you!
Again, welcome to the board!

Hi Wilf
I'm a 33yr old matture student at University of Reading, I was diagnosed as Dyspraxic about 18 months ago.
a potted concise explaination/definition I have yet to find. Currently I'm going with ahem ''It's like Dyslexia but rather that being a difficulty with words and reading it's a difficullty with organisation and sequencing both for intellectual tasks and physical ones'' I'm going to try it out on my to be boss tomorrow so I'll let you know how it goes.
I'll be inteerested how it goes for you being the disability officer - keep us posted?
