first time saying hello!

Post by pansy »

Hi

I can't believe i have found this forum and have found their are people out there just like me! I am amazed. I am a woman in her 30's and ever since i was a child have thought their was something a bit different about me.
I couldn't do maths, still cant! Still cant swim, found it very hard to tell the time and tie my shoe-laces but i can do that now.
I was always always the last picked at sports!
For a long time I wondered how come other people can do things I cant. I need many many repititions of a new skill in order to learn it and even then it might not stick in my brain.
If someone asks me to spell a word I normally need to write it down and can't do it in my head.
I can find it hard to express myself sometimes.
Reading this forum i found it incredible that other people cant wrap presents either or blow dry or straighten their hair.
I think though that throughout my life i have found coping mechanisims to live my everyday life. I have managed to get a university degree and even though i never thought i was stupid i knew their was something a bit different about my brain.
I am trying to learn how to drive but all the things put together like concentration , spatial awareness are very hard.
I tried learining a few yrs ago but gave up after 6 months of lessons. People are always amazed that I cant drive and think i just must have a mental block or something. I have a child though and want to try and learn before she gets to school.
Do people think they need to be formally assesed? Or is it difficult to diagnois in adults.
Nice to meet everyone!
