why do people with dyspraxia blank out during.conversations?

Post by sophie22 »

Hello everyone. I have not been diagnosed with dyspraxia but will go to a neuropsychologist and occupational therapist soon since I have alot of the symptoms. I was just wondering what causes people with dyspraxia to blank out during conversations? This happens to me about a few times per week.

Most likley the poor working memory , it gets a bit full up as your thinking about what to say next , stress builds on it and what ever you were thinking about pops out of your head . Im sure theres a more scientific method involving explaining how the frontal lobes which are responsible for high functioning brain patterns and short term memory are involved ... but i forgot it ;)

you know where I'm the worst....at the start when people introudce themselves...I never have a clue what their names are. I don't think I even hear it...I used to tell people it was because I wasn't sure if I would find them interesting enough to remember their names

An old boss of mine used to call it zoning out. She thought I just wasn't paying attention, she was just giving me too much info at the one time. I remember asking for directions once...after the 3rd turn left here I could hear a metal shutter clanging down in my head. I got lost...

I look like I'm looking through people very often. I'd be able to hear people but I can't keep my eyes focused. A friend of mine copied me once...hilarious.

Glad thats not just me.
I also have a habit of just "staring through people", it can get quite embarrassing if your on the train or something and people think your giving them the evil eye when your not even actually aware their there your just thinking.

I do this alot too, especially if it is things i dont understand. I call it my mind blank/blockage especially when there are many instructions.
I had a man come to look at us getting some renevations the other day. Dont understand anything about what he is saying. Just always say maybe you should talk to my husband?

but I am terrible for blanking out in conversations.. I'm trying to listen then I'll ether try and think of what to say next and miss everyone, or just generally blank out . :(

Or meetings. I did that yesterday. I just drift off. Not to sleep (well, not often) but just get distracted.

Me too. I am so scared. I will get tested in a few weeks for dyspraxia after I take my boards since I've been busy studying. I'm going to be taking my national boards in two weeks and I'm scared I won't do well. I'm a slow reader so studying has been tough. I also get distracted easily and mix up information. Today in the clinic, the supervising doctor was looking at me and pointed to a chair for me to sit down on but it looked like he was pointing to one of my classmates for her to start giving her presentation (we all give 2-3 minute presentations at the end of the day about our patients). And I was confused. I was like "should I go first?" And he said: "No. Sit down." I felt so embarassed and stupid. Then a few weeks ago I had to give a print out to the attending doctor of visual fields for the patients' right eye and left eye but I gave 2 copies of the right eye. It turned out I just grabbed the two papers without even looking. I looked like a fool. The print out of the left eye was still on the printer. Also I need to correct what I say alot.. I either say the wrong word in my conversations (like a word that sounds like what I'm trying to say). I don't get why this happens. And when I'm telling a story, sometimes I just lose my train of thought like I'm not even thinking. I also forget where I put things. Like say I put my wallet in my purse.. 2 minutes later I look in my other bag first and then when I see my wallet I'm like oh duh! I put it in my purse! I don't know how I can avoid doing these stupid things. is this due to dyspraxia or just being nervous? I'm about to be a doctor in a year and a half so I can't be that dumb. I just don't want to seem dumb to other people. I'm so stressed and scared. :(

my friends and close ones find my 'daydreaming' endearing although in reality of a ward or at uni it really is quite annoying...
nerves have a big part to play so the first step i think is to calm the mind and get into the habit of even just zoning out to get yourself together
has anyone heard of EFT?emotional freedom techniques?my counselor has just recommended this for me it might be helpful try youtube! :)
