Hello, I am new to the forum and havn't been formerly diagnosed but after some research have come to the conclusion that dyspraxia may be the trouble I have been expierencing for all these years! I am 45 and expeirenced difficulties at school from age 5 onwards, saw child phycologists who decided that I was cross-lateral, right handed and should of been left handed, great reading age but VERY slow reader, terrible at hand writing! bad co-ordination and hand eye co-ordination, very clumsy ,my mother descrbed me as being like a pin ball ricocheting from one piece of furniture to the next! I have virtually no sense of smell and a compulsive list maker, if its not on the list it won't get done/bought! I have a poor short term memory and I am easily distracted I have NO memory for numbers (as my bank /credit card issues would tell you , pin numbers!!!????) I am a creature of routine and change distresses me. I took my driving test 5 times befor I past, I am very determined and won't give up on things I have set my mind on. I know I am different and stroggle with every day things more than other people I know, does this sound familiar? Is it worth me trying to get an assessment?
Getting very emotional typing this so had to walk away ,never talked to anyone about this before!

Yes! get an assessment.. definitly.. then you've a better idea of what your probs actually are & can then find coping strategies, though in my experience help out there for dyspraxics, specially adults are about nil.. good luck with it ~ & I'm always up for a chat =o)
got more coping strategies than I got drawers in my flat to put them in!!!!!!!!!
Saz

I am a newbie to these forums and this is my first post. For years Ive struggled with understanding why I can not do certain things or why others can do it and I cant or have to work ten times harder at it.Ive finally come to the conclusion that I may well have Dyspraxia. My daugther has it and possibly my son,he is being assessed at the moment.I am 41 now and have suffered from very low self esteem for many years.I suffer from depression and believe this stems from all those years of being made to feel thick at school. The earlier post rings so many bells for me.I always had problems with learning new things,eg,times tables, reading, maths, etc.I learned to drive about 19 years ago and after seeing a hypnotherapist, finally got up the courage to drive 17 years later.I past my test first time (goodnesss knows how),but remember struggling for months with my 3 point turn, although reversing was no problem and I did it first time.I couldnt get it into my head which way to turn the wheel and having to look over my shoulder at the same time.I can still only drive set routes within my local area and get confused with road markings etc.I was a very clumsy child always falling over, not knowing my left from right for years.I have no sense of direction and my memory is a joke.My friends always take the mick about it.I have to have everything written down although I have recently bought myself a voice recorder which is brilliant and I carry it everywhere.I have often gone to the doctors or had a conversation and couldnt remember anything about what was said afterwards. The list goes on and on.There is no test for adult dyspraxia in my area, has anyone any idea how I can get tested and get a diagnosis?Sorry for the long post.
