Computer Science at university

Before the summer I was assessed as Dyspraxic (I went expecting to be Dyslexic) and next week I start my 2nd year of Computer Science at university.

Computer Science is not IT or Computing that you might get up to A-level. It's a lot about mathematical problem solving and theory behind computer programming. There's a lot of thinking up concepts and algorithms which I like and can do. Just some of this can get explained in just a long text, even though it was probably originaly thought up with a spider digram.

Is anyone here doing, or done, Computer Science at university?

I'm a mathematics major with computer science option (minor) at my university. The Computer science department here really blows. I did the work at home one day but left it at home. I came to school an hour and 20 mins early though. So I went back home to get it. I live 45 mins away though, and I ended up walking in the door a couple mins late. I also called a friend to tell the teacher I would be a couple mins late, and they absolutely refused to accept it.

Some of the stuff is complicated and none answers my questions. IT is very hard to do well in computer science. I'm good at the actual work but I'm not good with the class's policies. My teacher assistant also grade my hw and tests wrong he often marks probs down for messy work on several problems when there is only supposed to be a one pt deduction. That Ta also has been a TA in another class I was in but he wasn't mine at the time. Near the end of the semester we have peer review so one day I asked him if today was peer review 5 mins from class and he said no. This was a blatant lie b/c we did have peer review (where we rate the teacher and TAs). He did it b/c the teacher disliked me and he wanted to gain favor with the professors. I think csc classes are a load of crap because they really don't teach current techniques anyway.

I would speak to student disability support, at my uni they had stickers which could be put on coursework to make sure that tutors did not mark you down for messy work, gramatical errors etc. Also they would email the tutors let them know the situation as well. I would speak to your student rep or a senoir lecturer if the marking is wrong.... don't let them get away with it as it will likely efect your overall grade....

In the united states, someone who has special needs is considered retarded even if they aren't. When I was in high school I was a part of special ed. and Other teacher's didn't even want me in their class and they didn't think that I was able to function in any of their classes and some would outright hate me for changing their duties. They felt I was normal, and just trying to make excuses or they felt that I was stupid. Either way though they ended up hating me and not giving me any of the accomodations anyway. I decided at the end of my high school education that I would go through life marked as a retard. I find it rediculous though that these classes can't even follow there own policies, which in the case of my hw should be one pt for neatness of the whole hw, rather than half the pts for each question. My ta is just picking on me, and he has before as I said in my message. He is a lying suck up. I don't know about the UK but in the usa if your different you're retarded. :(

If you think the TA is picking specifically on you report him/her.... He she/should not be doing this.... it is wrong.... Maybe your TA is not a suitinable person to be in the job!

I was thinking of doing computer science with business but I can't because my maths isn't good enough.

I'm just starting my second year of computer science at bristol, but that makes me a year behind you. I was diagnosed with dyspraxia in year 3 (age 7/8) and have used a laptop for writing tasks since year 4.

Where I'm doing CS maths is definitely important and 3 of the exams last year were maths, but that and the variety is partly why I enjoy it.

I didn't do computing at A-level as I found ICT boring and this was too similar.

Last year my department gave everyone a 3 day automatic extension and most work was online, which really helped. In the UK most places would be more considerate and willing to help.

I'm studying computer science too. I find it hard. I am awful at the programming, and I am so lucky the was only one maths module in the first year, although some of my modules have a bit of simple maths in them (which I am also awful at). I find it hard to concentrate in lectures and I always forget what they said. I also find it hard to stick to deadlines. ARGH. but I really am trying and I'm going to get through this  . I feel really happy when I achieve things though.
