It can take practise with new people. If you are not sure then ask. It will save problems later on.

I also tend to be over literal.

I've the same problem too. I often take people too literally in all the things they say and do, but somehow over the years I've figured out how people work and why they do things. It helps some, but it makes people dreadfully predictable

That's me too. Oftentimes I find it hard to find out when people are joking and this gets me hurt a lot. I try to laugh along with the people, especially if I don't get the joke. This happened at work the other day and everyone was being kind to me. They were laughing, but I'm not sure why. They were being really nice though but I think I said the wrong thing and that's what made them laugh so I laughed at my own words. It was really weird. I try to study people on TV and in movies to see how I should act in certain situations. This works to a certain extent.

Remind me to tell you someday of the time when I completely failed to get the gist of the conversation in the primary school staffroom about the batteries and the vibrating sex toy.

Embarrassing? Only a little. :-#

I have that problem, too. It's really hard for me to tell when people are joking or using a figure of speech. I tried reading different books (like Jane Austen) so I could study conversations and try to figure out what cues to look for, but I am not having much luck. Are there any self-help books out there that help with deciphering soical situations?

I have this problem ALL the time I do not fully comprehend what people are saying, or their intentions behind the words wether they are being serious, joking, sarcastic etc and I do feel a bit "on the outside" in social situations - hence why I would love to have a dyspraxix friend like me who I could meet up with every now and again. have also tried watching comedy and films to see if I could get any pointers but it only works to a certain extent and my current boss has a very strange sense of humour where he pretends to be serious when he is really joking and I just cant get my head around it, my work colleagues keep having to tell me when he is being serious and when he is joking.

I'm quite crap at it too. But I used to be even worse. I learnt a lot about people's emotions by going to drama lessons. I still have problems with seeing people's double intentions, though.

I have this issue too, especially when being given instructions, it drives me barmy. Especially when people are unpleasant if you need to have something repeated. i.e. like the OP mentioned of not being sure exactly what to do and when.

I also have this problem all the time, i don't understand people an they don't understand me, something gets lost in translation. my main problem is telling the difference between people laughing at me because i am funny and people laughing at me in a teasing malicious way after i said or did something that made them laugh, i often can't tell even if its my family laughing whether i am being genuinely funny or if they are picking on me, it drives me nuts.

Iam usually in berkshire, surrey or brighton and hove if anyone wants to meet up?

Me too. I take things very literally and often miss nuances. I really don't know why people find some jokes funny either. I often pretend that I got the joke and then spends hours thinking about what the joke meant. I sometimes have people explain them to but then they aren't funny anymore and people think that you're strange
