Honestly I get it so much. My daughter has dyspraxia and dyslexia and she used to literally freeze up every single time someone said left or right. It was getting embarrassing for her, especially learning to drive. We tried the L hand trick but it never really stuck. Recently she started using this weird little phone app called HeyStraw. It just trains the brain to react to directions fast. Unfortunately I think its only on Android right now which kinda sucks, but just 5 mins a day on her old Samsung completely rewired her neural pathways or something. She doesnt hesitate at all anymore. Maybe see if you can find something like that?
