Adult Fiction

I'm struggling to get into Adult Fiction. I know that at 24 I should not be always reading from the teenage/childrens section.
I'm reading The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans but I'm not getting very far. I don't understand what some of the words mean.
Can anyone suggest other books I could try?

I'm a big fan of Terry Pratchett's discworld series. (and don't try to tell me those aren't for adults!)

The Hitchiker's Guide to The Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

I would recommend The curious incident of the dog in the night -time by Mark Haddon written about auspergers and autism by an aspergic author.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman - excellent novel about Gods without believers living out their lives in Modern America.

A difficult plot but not too many complex words as I recall is a medieval religious thriller set during the reformation in europe is the book "Q" by Luther Blissett.

China Meiville's 'Perdido Street Station' is also very good and you'll never look at Moths again in the same light.

How about those to be going along with?

I'm not a fan of reading, so no suggestions from me. Is that a dyspraxic trait?

I love reading. So I'd vote no, however, dyspraxia is not a homgeonous condition and everyone experiences clusters of difficulties pertinent to them. I sturggle with my grammar and writing but it's possible for dyspraxics to fall along similar lines to dyslexics (similar prognosis's, different diagnosis) and struggle with reading not usually because of visual mis-cues of letters on the page but remembering what is read in order, finding, and keeping attention on the page etc.

So....er.....maybe.

I recently enjoyed reading Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, nothing like a funny book about the end of the world and the avoidance of it.

I always picture an eternally young John Cussak as the role of Crowly. I know by now he must of aged but in my minds eye he'd be perfect.

Not ficiton: but in celebration of the 150th anniversary of it's publication, I've decided to read Darwin's On the Origin of Species.

about the only reading I do is on the forum. and things that interest me, or points of information like trucking magazzine articles, so it might be a dyspraxic trait with me.

I find the words start moving if I sit down too long looking at something like a book, and start doing other stuff, so I only read short stuff that is easy to put down, and not lose where I was.

about the only books I enjoyed in school were the adventure books like make a choice on what happens next, but used to loose where I was in the story then. either that or kept killing the character off!!

I'm getting some new books for my birthday. Two about fossils. Figured I'd brush up on my palaeontology.

Sometimes I use a ruler to keep my place depending on what the print is like.
I'm having a break from The Horse Whisperer. I am now reading Harry Potter. I have just finished the 3rd book.
I have read The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night Time. It's brilliant! I hope someone writes a fictional novel of that standard about dyspraxia. I'd like to do it, but I'm not sue if I could.

I once swatted a wasp with a copy of Hegel's 'Logic'.

I was not paying due care and attention at the time (wasps give me the willies) so I finally caught up with it when it had settled on the bathroom mirror.

I got the wasp. And the mirror which broke into large reflective shards. Iroically bisecting the shattered remians of the wasp adding further injury to insult.

I like loads of stuff, ranging from teenage fiction to the classics. My favourites would probably have to be The Dark Materials, LOTR and Great Expectations. I pretty much like most genres though.

You've got some classics in their Mattie! Glad to see you're enjoying The Dark materials trilogy. I was so disappointed they cut the last third of the book out of the film!

Have you ever read any Neil Gaiman books? You might enjoy Neverwhere and American Gods, the later is a blend of fantasy and mythology - if you've got the stomach for LOTR, and the plot of Dark materials, I think you'll handle that okay.

I just realised I already recommend American Gods in my original posting here so feeling a bit foolish but pressing on regardless, I've just found out that for a limited time only it is possible to read all of American Gods online and for free!

I quite like reading fiction but I find it takes a lot more concentration and effort than non-ficition. I find with fiction particularly fantasy books while I enjoy them I get sucked into it and I can read all day without realising. I particularly like reading biographies as they take little effort on my part, but I still find them thoroughly enjoyable.

Recently I had access to the uni library again (I lived in a different city to where I go to uni and we just moved closer), and I got out a whole load of books about Aspergers and ADHD, finished 5 books in one weekend.
