my job in accounts

Post by xdyspraxic_accountantx »

hey everyone
My name is Florence
im 18 years old and suffer with ADHD, dyspraxia, and an anxiety disorder i had a late diagnosis for both because i was very placid when i was younger and the adhd didnt get picked up until secondary school when i was seeing my therapist for my anxiety and depression...(which was a mess but thats another post lol)

Anyway ive had a job as a trainee accountant for the last two weeks and i will shortly be studying for my accounting qualifications.

today i had a meeting to review with my boss and they found out about my difficulties and seemed really pissed off that i hadnt told them.

i didnt get asked at any point if i had these difficulties and thought it best to try and geton with it.

I thought i would not have to disclose this information because surely it is at my discretion who i do and do not tell.

He then went on to say he was very very dissapointed in me like i was some sore of fraudster and that i was 'slow' which considering the circumstances i think im doing pretty effing well and the people in the office think im doing well too :*(
(sorry im ranting)
but anyway has anybody else had this or could offer some advice ?

Florence

I am not sure on this one sorry Flo, but my understanding of the disability act is that you can choose to tell an employer. not sure where it goes as far as working as good as the next person goes.

ie if someone can write a 1000 pages, and you can only do 1 in the same time.

yes it is still a disability, and they will possibly try to get rid of you a different way, mainly because of the disability discrimination act.

I think you had better go see Citizen's Advice or something to see where the law stands about being discriminated against with reguards work efficiency. and also on where you stand about not telling an employer at the interview/after an interview that you have these problems.

edit: but I also think the law would be on the side of the employer, as you didn't ask for help with the work. which there maybe several loop holes, but be extremely hard to prove, like councilling, or something, at the time.

ok, so there is very little chance of getting the job telling them at the interview, but not sure about after, if you find out please let us know.

You might want to get straight into Citizens Advice and by rights it is entirely your decision on who you choose or not to tell.

IT IS NOT A LEGAL REQUIREMENT FOR YOU TO INFORM ANYBODY AT ALL!

Try not to think of it as a negetive, it may be a positive in disguise. The firm you work for may be able to get funding from the government to get equipment for you to help you do your job and stand on a even playingfield... especially as you have just started!

Hi Florence, I used to work as a Nokia Service Tecnician, fixing mobile phones, when I got the job I never realy told anyone about my Dyspraxia, as my handwriting was ok, and most paperwork was done on computer. I struggled managing my time, knowing what to do at what point in the day. For almost a year and a half I told no one, and after a long chain of realy poor audits I finaly plucked up the courage to tell my reigonal manager. I printed off the notes from the Dyspraxia Foundation Website. They could not sack me, for poor performance. My reigonal manager was ok about it, and tried to help by instaling MS Outlook on PC's at work, which did help a bit. Some people understand dyspraxia more than others.

I sometimes dont tell potential employers about my dyspraxia, it just depends on what sort of job I am applying for.

Hope this helps

Hi Florence I am 37 and only was diagnosed last week with dyspraxia along with dyscalculia and a bit of dyslexia. If you can do a job ok like a "non affected" person why the hell should you tell an employer. I think like this I'd only tell an employer if I HAD TO.
