Hi I'm new.

Post by Vincent »

Hello,
I am a 46 year old man from Ireland.
I found out I had dyspraxia one week ago. Before that I had never even heard the word.
I have spent my whole life wondering what the **** is wrong with me, and other people have wondered the same. (Of course I have been doing other stuff too!)

What prompted me to get help was, my 3-year-old daughter is the first person I have ever met who is like me.

I am intelligent, in that I can score very highly on IQ tests, but I have great difficulty carrying out even the most simple tasks. For this reason I am barely employable. I have managed to hold down my current job for over 5 years (in the IT sector) but I see younger, less experienced people being promoted ahead of me all the time. I have never been promoted.

I am very good at quizzes because I am able to remember vast amounts of trivia. Whatever way I take in information, I can take in a lot, just not the stuff I'm "supposed" to remember.

Am I clumsy? Yes a bit I suppose. I don't go around breaking things and gathering bruises on a daily basis, but I'm terrible at snooker, pool and bowling. Overall I'm not too bad compared to some.
At my age, the clumsiness doesn't matter anymore really. I've finally mastered some things (cycling, driving) and given up entirely on others (sports).

So that's me anyway. I'm not sure where to go or what to do now. Well at least having dyspraxia is a lot better than having a bad case of "what the f is wrong with me?".
It's great to find out I'm not alone. I do have a loving wife and kids, and good friends, but I've never met anyone before who understands me, let alone who is like me. Hopefully that will change now.

Look forward to chatting more,
Regards,
Vincent.

Welcome to the forum Vincent,

I found out about the condition just over 3 years ago, but only just over 2 and a half years of knowing that I got the condition myself.

I hope you feel relieved now you know, and can get on with things that you enjoy (like chatting on here!!)

Welcome Vincent. I only discovered I'm dyspraxic last year. I've always known I was a bit 'unusual' though!

Great that you managed to master driving. I really need to do that and keep failing my test in an automatic car. Any tips gratefully received ;)

Hi Vincent I was like you till last week EXCEPT I felt I was doing just fine. I've been diagnosed with dyspraxia dyscalculia and some dyslexia too. I am 37 in England. If you wish to chat pm or e mail me You're not alone. Its good this forum exsists. I have problems with coordination throwing catching hitting a ball with a bat plus short term memory issues and also "putting my foot in it" by "saying the wrong thing" all without meaning too.
