Newbie from Scotland

Post by falconry-fan »

Hello, I'm 23,female and from Scotland and very grateful that I've found this forum.

I haven't had an official diagnosis yet, my teachers often made comments about my lack of coordination and my very short attention span, but nothing was done, since I was a child my mother thought I had dyspraxia,I've always been extremely clumsy with a poor attention span and very poor coordination.

I can't hold a pencil in the manner that most people do,my organisational skills are almost non existent,I have difficulty with simple tasks such as cooking a meal,I have almost no short term memory and often forget instructions that were given to me only seconds before.

Ironing is almost impossible for me,I avoid putting makeup on because doing so is very difficult for me,I had to give up driving lessons because I was getting so stressed about it.

My mother and I were discussing this earlier, and I decided to look up a few sites relating to dyspraxia, they could have been written entirely about me, I'm now sure I have this disorder,I still have no official diagnosis but it's such a relief to have an explanation for my problems.

I'm planning on ordering some books from the dyspraxia foundation, I'm so excited about this, I've spent years thinking I was just plain stupid, despite having a very high iq.

I'm hoping to get an official diagnosis soon and I'm planning on seeing my GP asap.

Welcome falconry fan!
I only discovered dyspraxia last month. Before that I lived my whole life with a nagging voice in my head saying "what the hell is wrong with me? Why can't I be like other people?".

It never went away, even though I am now 46, married with 2 children.
You might think 23 is late but it is never too late.

One difference it has made to me is, I don't keep trying to be like everyone else. That kept not working and I kept trying it, because I didn't know what else to try.

I still don't know how to stay focussed and get things done like other people, but I'm not as bad as I was. I work in I.T. and have to keep going, because of family and mortgage. I have a few organisational things that work up to a point. I'll go into more detail if you want.

All the best,
Vincent.

Oh cool, another Scot ^_^. Welcome to the forums.

If your GP blows you off to start with, keep badgering them, they can only say no so many times after all. Despite being diagnosed when I was 5 my mum was given very little information about what 'minimal brain damage' was. She eventually found out via a TV programme about Dyspraxia and went looking for more information.

I got re-assessed in January this year while I was in my final year at university, so that took some of the pain out of the diagnosis ^_^. I look forward to seeing you post mroe often around the forums.

Welcome!

I am also 23 and only got officially diagnosed at the beginning of September with Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. I would definitely recommend the book by Mary Colley I bought it and it was fab, I really must have another look through that one.
