Assessment date came through..

Post by Dani »

My assessment date with an Educational Psychologist has just come through today and I'm nervous about it. I'm at college and am only being assessed now at the age of 34. The teachers have been nice and understanding telling me not to worry but I am

My learning support tutor told me it'll take anything from 1 hour to 3 hours. No one is really telling me what it'll involve because its an outside assessor coming in to do it.

Thought I'd share my feelings with you guys because some of you have been through it.

soz not much help here, as my assessment was back in October 1986, but didn't find out about the condition until 3 years ago, then went to view my medical records 2 and a half years ago, as the previous gp always said everything was fine, and never told us what any results were.

I was relieved to finally get the results, but at the same time angry that we weren't told sooner, as school life, and part of college life was a living hell, like all the class going on about my handwriting speed, teachers were worse.

I say part of college, as then the rest of my time in college, I found that if I sat so I could see the board, and started the same time as the lecturer, and written with capital letters, then I could do twice the amount of written work in the same time. still getting the class complaining, but not as bad as being like 3 or 4 lines down the board!

now 2 and a half years on, then I am not feeling so angry. or confused now. as I think having this forum has helped a lot with coming to terms with it, instead of not being able to talk to anyone, as family would become angry whenever I brought up the subject, think it was that we were left in the dark for so long, when they were trying to find out what was wrong.

and not being able to talk, had meant it still left me bitter, and angry. At least you found somewhere to talk first!!

good luck with the assessment, and try not to let it get to you. as you might find the same feelings, when you finally find out, but at least it hasn't been 19 years in your medical records, without you knowing the outcome of the assessment. so you should be more relieved, than bitter and angry.

let us know how you get on, and try not to think too much about it.

Just remember to ask for details if they do tell you what you expect - I got diagnosed with dyspraxia at 14-15 but never found anything out about it untill I was in my second year of Uni. My mum thought I had mild Aspergers but was corrected.

But still I was a victim of 'explain it to the parents not the sufferer' so being older you might come off better.

I was sort of lucky though, as my mother watched the segment about it back in something like 1997, as she was off work on the sick.

and even though I wanted her to chase up about the condition, she didn't, as everyone else in the family said don't to her.

it wasn't until I watched it, and then phoned her in work 3 years ago, that she remembered she written the condition on a piece of paper, (my mother remembering something :-k )

my memory is better than my mothers, only thing I forget is in a rush, or shopping lists, and always had problems whenever my brother asks me to get him one thing, if they don't have that, he will have something else, and usually the list is about 6 thing's if they haven't got!

so try to keep everything in a jacket pocket, or in sight so that I do see it before I forget where it is, not really good idea doing fridge or freezer shopping before going to my parents place, as I put that in their fridge, and 99 times out of a 100 I will forget it.

but my longer term memory is about the best in the family.

Hiya got the results of my assessment back today at college and it turns out that I'm both dyslexic and dyspraxic.. well its more like I'm dyslexic with dyspraxic tendancies. Am I happy? Well yes because I'm 34 and have been telling teachers for years that I have something wrong with me and I feel sort of vindicated now. I wasn't expecting dyslexia though because my family has a history of dyspraxia and no dyslexia.. feel kinda weird now lol
