FOOD!

Post by SavV »

Happy Easter all from the other side of the world, where its cold, wet and horrid. We even had to get the fire going as the indoor temperature dropped below 14 degrees C, or 57.2 degrees F for those of you who work in the non-metric.

Anyway, I thought this as good of a time as any to bring up....FOOD! (As the title indicates. Rather destroying the effect of that pause there). Anywho, I was wondering if there are any other 'fussy-eaters' out there, or if its just me being different again

I have big problems when we go out places to eat, as I will only eat certain types of foods. Its not that I don't like other food. Its just that it 'feels' funny in my mouth, so I don't eat it. Oranges are a prime example, I love the taste of oranges but they feel funny so I don't eat them. So I've ended up with a rather limited palette. Meals for me are meat, spuds, carrot (raw only) and occasionally lettuce. That's about it. Now the odd part, if the spud is mashed and the meat or carrot gets in it, I can't eat the bits that ended up mixed with the other....Actually, now I think about it, I have to have everything spaced out nicely on my plate so nothing is touching, if it does touch i have a habit of shifting it so its not. Once upon a time I wouldn't have eaten it then, but I'm getting better. As long as its not touching for too long its ok. If like the carrot was under the spud for 1 few minutess and got warm, I wouldn't eat the carrot. But then, if things are 'supposed' to be touching, ie if I stick my meat, carrot and lettuce in a sandwich its fine and I don't have a problem with it.

Anyone else care to share?

Cheers,

i used to have massive problems with food when i was a kid, the tastes textures smells etc, I ended up with eating disorders as a teenager and as i got over them i became much less fussy over food. but theres still lots of things i cant touch, meat, cellery, avacados and cranberrys inparticular, but often i struggle to eat properly if im stressed and find i can only eat one thing at a time, so it makes eating proper meals out difficult. saying that im often better at eating if im eating out (if im not stressed that is) cause if a meals prepared for me i dont find it so hard to eat foods together.

I agree with you on raw carrot, I suppose it is more to do with the taste than anything, I don't mind it cooked, but usually get whoever is cooking (except. eating out) to save some raw carrot.

as for things like one type of food touching another, then it doesn't bother me, as long as it isn't something I really don't like, and can't stand the taste of.

so might just be your personal preference.

I continue to have limited appreciation for several foods, although I do force myself to eat that which doesn't naturally appeal. I can't stand the consistency of tomatoes, and am not keen on the taste either for that matter.

I did remarkably well on my trip, although I couldn't find a taste for almost any Korean food and a traditional Japanese breakfast contained many things I could neither recognise nor appreciate! Fermented beans - yuk!

Nothing has yet to surpass good British stodge. Roast dinner with yorkshire puds of course, bangers and mash, scampi and chips, all that sort of quality fare!

i'm really fussy and to make it worse, i'm a veggie!

i'm pretty similar to savV in that i love the taste of oranges but i just can't eat them, the texture is horrible! i also don't like foods being mixed, for instance, i hated it when we used to have curry and my mum put the curry on top of the rice...i wouldn't refuse to eat it but it would irritate me!

i guess i don't eat especially healthy, i take my extremely fast metabolism for granted. quite often i just can't decide what to cook even if there's plenty of choice so i just have a bowl of cereal. it doesn't help that i'm not very good at cooking anyway (i can't cope with timing things or measuring things out) so i tend to go for the easier options of something on toast, cereal or a takeaway if i'm feeling flush!

I am funny with some foods... I find that I can ony eat raw carrot as I hate the texture of cooked. Whole tomatoes I can't touch as they make me sick yet I am ok when they are in ketch up or processed in some way. I don't like gravy and if any food has it on I would not eat it.

I supposed you could put Christmas Pud here! my main problem with it is the amount it blows my head off! you can really taste the alcohol in it. so when my father does the custard for it, I always insist that he makes the custard, then put it on my pud, and then add the brandy or whatever!

then it is just about eatable, as my father is very heavy handed on the brandy! maybe it is because I am not that much of a drinker, or something, but I feel plastered after a christmas pud with brandy sauce!

about the only thing I liked as far as school meals goes, was the custard!! so much so the dinnerladies knew that I would be back for a 2nd or 3rd helping!!

but then as for comp, then very rarely stayed in school for dinner, I ended up going to the chip shop, or the video shop. or stick to the fairly safe option of a salad. as the texture to the food still wasn't cooked enough for my taste/texture. like potatoes that you could stand a fork in, mashed potatoes weren't much better. and concrete chips. it did go like the song "School Dinners"!!

I'm feeling kinda left out here as Im not too fussy an eater, but I will say I don't like gummy sweets as much as I used to, the texture in some of them makes me balk. I don't like oranges either but that's mostly because I almost always manage to keep a bit of the pith on and then the orange just tastes horribly bitter. I don't like orange juice either for that reason *makes face*.

I'll eat raw turnip but not if its cooked and mashed and I'll only eat a little if its been in a stew. I don't like tomatoes or brussels sprouts either, which isn't all that bad as far as fruit and veg go. I don't like sauce slathered all over my rice either but I have to put up with it if my mum's cooking as my younger brother won't eat his rice any other way {yes he is much more fussy than I am XP}.

Other than that I'm pretty decent and love to try out new flavours and textures {raw tuna= yummy IMO} so I guess I'm not as bad as others are ^_^.

Ooooooooo I see I'm not the only one who can't stand a Tomato. Those things not only feel funny, but taste horrid. I can't eat anything thats got tomato juice on it or I'm likely to try and chuck.

I used to be really, really bad with foods touching each other but mum and dad have worked most of it out of me now. Although, I'm still not a fan of stews where everything is in togother. Someone mentioned gravy, I can't have gravy on anything as then I don't eat it.

I've tried a few new things over the years, some of them tasted oh so good but the texture of them in my mouth was so unpleasant I refuse to eat them ever again unless I HAVE to. I do agree with Robyn, if I am out I am more likely to eat my foods 'mixed' with one another, although if I am rather stressed I can be seen moving everything around the plate so that they are seperated and I can then eat one thing at a time.... Embarrasses my sister no end, great fun!

Cheers,
SavV

i have no problems with food in fact i love food. the only things i dont eat are proccessed foods like ready meals processed burgers etc and am pratically a vegetarian but i suppose that is because am very in to nutrition and if i cant do the medical deghree after the one i start in sept as my son might not be old enough for me to be working silly hours and i still maybe single. then i will hopefully go and do the dietics degree and become a dietician. but any way back to the plot... food i dont like mouldy cheeses like stilton and gorgenzola and cockels and muscles cos they look like snot sorry but they do think thats about it for what i dont like

I don't like most veggies because they have a weird texture. I can only really eat potatoes, raw carrots, and celery.

For other foods, I can eat almost any of them as long as I like the taste.

I take it you mean vegetables as opposed to vegetarians! I'm not sure we'd be such a great texture either mind you.

I'm a pain to cook for, as I only eat raw vegetables and hate them cooked.

i think to be honest the only problem I have with food is I cant stand it dry, its got to have some kind of sauce or gravy on it, I mean if I have proper chips (as opposed to frozen chips) I hte them dry, its like trying to eat knives in my opinion, its just uncomfortable to be honest trying to eat some foods. its rather peculiar isnt it?
