Weekly discussion: National dish

To add a bit of a variety to the discussions, we're going to try out a series of discussion topics, each lasting a week. If they're popular, we'll keep them going, if not, we won't.

To start us off we've got the topic of national dish. In Britain at the moment there's something of a battle of the status of national dish between Fish & Chips and Curry. Which one of these holds the rightful place as national dish in your heart, or perhaps neither do. How about the venerable Sunday Roast, or perhaps the mighty Haggis is the ultimate dish in your neck of the woods. Give your nomination and why.

If you're outside of the UK we'd like to hear your vote too! Be it the Australian Pie, the American Hamburger, the Irish Stew or something else entirely, have your say!

To start with this post will run for one week until next Thursday 19th April, although it might be extended if need be.

I think that Fish and Chips should be the traditional dish of Britain because if you live in a foreign country say for example Germany they don't really eat fish and chips so when they come to Britain and see Fish and Chips on a menu they must be really excited at trying the new dish.

Sunday roast - roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings, the whole lot. Followed by fish and chips.

single item of food would have to be Scottish Lava Bread, brought down from Scotland, not this packaged in Scotland rubbish!! that they try to flog in the supermarkets!

What happened to the haggis *is sad that haggis gets no love*. But if theres going to be a tie between two British foods; fish and chips and Korma are the two contenders for me .

I love French pastries though and I mean the ones you actually get in France and not just the pre-packaged croissants we get across this side of the channel. Got two for breakfast every morning when I went to Strassbourg with the school in 2nd year ^_^.

I have to admit to never trying haggis.... I might be brave one day and try it! For those who have tried it... What does it taste like?

Fish and chips is a major contender, but in my eyes, the national dish is a sausage sarnie and a mug of tea, quick, simple and tasty (like myself)

defo fish n chips wrapped in newspaper!! or a roast dinner plus all the trimmings. or scouse now that is tasty n every region has their own variation so must be a britsh traditional dish

i had curry tonight

and i've just realised that i had a curry yesterday, but tonights one was a take away paid for by my dad so it would've been wrong to say no!

i'd have to say fish and chips for national dish though, it's properly british, rather than adopted british.

or, how about a comprimise....chips and curry sauce?!

Fish & Chips is certainly a good national dish however it doesn't get my vote.

For does not the Sunday Roast play the most venerable and crucial role in the weekly pattern of the nation? It's Sunday afternoon/evening. What's more British then having a plate full of roast beef, yorkshire pud, veg and gravy while making wild guesses at the value of everything on Antiques Roadshow? I can't think of a meal I look forward to more and it's a key part of our weekends. Plus Mum's Yorkshire puds can't be beat!
