Swimming

Post by Liz944 »

Does anyone on the forum swim competitively?

I understand that the DSE has an s17 category for dyspraxic swimers and wanted to know how to get involved...

Any advice or info appreciated...

I swim very occasionally, generally just when I'm on holiday where there's a beach or pool which in recent years has been none too often. From my trip last year I discovered I could swim, I could breathe, but I can't swim & breathe at the same time! (unless I swim on my back!)

I think I would drown bfore the rock as well, soz liz, as wasn't confident enough when a kid, to even put my head in the water, so went to as many classes, as possible, but still couldn't get my confidence lvl up enough to let go of something solid.

This will sound silly wihen I competed before I knew what to do to register etc... but now totally confused as I need to register again with the ASA , get classified as a disabled swimmer (I am not sure if I also need IPC registration depending on classification given), and get a functional ability card. Yet more forms to fill in and people to see.. HELP!!!!!!!!!!! Save me from the forms....

yeah I agree there, form filling, especially to do with benefits is the worst part, I know people that have been trained to fill in the application forms, still hate doing them, and don't totally understand them. so people like us would never totally understand the form after about 1/2 way at most.

I think the disability discrimination act should be updated to include dyspraxics and forms so we'd never have to fill them in again!

I find many forms terrible, and often the questions can be understood in different ways or are simply not at all clear as to what is intended, at least to my eye that's the case.

I will 500th that Dan! I absolutely can't stand forms, best bit is on most the forms you get sent, they give you stupid amounts of time, like 2 weeks from the date that they actually sent it, not 2 weeks after you recieve it. as usually takes a week to go through the mail process

and yet you have already told them you are dyspraxic in about 500 forms, so to get help, then usually you got to book an appointment to see someone, and they don't usually like less than 2 weeks notice!!

Really fed up now! :*( I have found out that the S17 category for dyspraxia is only for DSE events in Britain which are few and far between... I need to get a classification of S14 for learning disabilities for international events but due to a ban since the sidney games due to cheating the class are not allowed to compete in the paraolympics :-({|= Hope that changes in time for 2012 in London... Think if I want to get involved I will have to volunteer as a time keeper or obsever...

When I was in primary school we used to have swiming lessons every wednesday and all my time I was there I was in the beginners group, but I can now swim quite well and really enjoy it.

This might just be me - but I really enjoy swimming underwater - and am rather good at it. I occassionally test myself to see just how long I can stay under on one breath. (Last gym I went to, LA Fitness, Lancaster PA, USA: I made it almost across the length of the pool in one go, I was maybe about a metre short!)

I'm pretty graceless swimming on the surface, but glide along nicely in pools when I go swimming in gyms and pools.
