Dyspraxic and Never been in a relationship before

Post by EmilyyNics »

Hi everyone,

I’m 33 and I’ve never been in a relationship before. I’m also dyspraxic, and lately I’ve been finding myself quite scared and anxious about the whole idea of dating and getting into a relationship.

Part of me worries that I’m very behind compared with other people my age, and I sometimes wonder whether it’s going to be difficult for me because I haven’t had those experiences before. I worry about not knowing what I’m supposed to do, how relationships are meant to work, or whether someone would understand and accept me as I am.

At the same time, I would really like to experience having a relationship and meeting someone. I don’t want fear or overthinking to stop me from trying.

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been in a similar situation — especially anyone who started dating later in life, has dyspraxia, or simply felt nervous about relationships because they had no previous experience.

How did you get past the fear and take that first step? And did being inexperienced turn out to be as big a problem as you initially thought?

Thanks for reading. ❤️

I'm in a similar situation. Love hasn't found me nor me it. I had and have similar worries and fears. I think we often self-sabotage believing it's for a reason we're still single. Words of comfort like you'll know when you meet the right person and they won't judge are often drowned out by our overthinking brains. I believe that best advice is to put ourselves out there (with sensible safety barriers) but it can be difficult to overcome our sensible caution and self-protective mechanisms.

Some people say volunteering is a good way but equally we have to be careful not to use all our spoons.
Online dating so often doesn't even feel psychologically safe due to rejection/ghosting and some people forgetting they need to be decent human beings.

There was an old thread (13 yrs ago) on here about a similar topic though dominated a bit by the blokes

With a foot full of bullets I tried to run faster but I just hobbled on to the next disaster.
