I should really get driving as I'd be good as the responsible driver. I don't really like the taste of any alcoholic drinks, so as long as the night didn't stretch out too long into sober man's monotony I would mind spend the evenings supping something light (if no less expensive as the alcoholic equivalents) and actually enjoying them.

Did you know that in northen ireland car insurance companies sponsor pubs to provide free soft drinks to designated drivers around big events like NYE.

I just found this out a few days ago, is that not the best idea you've ever heard?

it is usually how things turn out for me Dan, but tell you what I like is going to Kare-oke's, and taking part, it is ok, me, and a friend take bet's on who can smash the most windows with our singing before we get kicked out of a pub!!!!!!

I should give up on the bets! it has cost me an arm, and a leg!!!!!

I think it is the best idea I have heard of, Greg, maybe not free soft drinks, but putting the soft drinks to a reasonable price so the driver doesn't end up paying more than the drinkers!

but it is a good idea all the same.

The first time I got really drunk was the last time for me. I was like 16 or 17. ME and four of my friends went through a bottle of tequila, two bottles of schnops, and loads of beer. NOt to mention a little bit of the reefer. I woke up the next morning and felt fine. Like I just had the best sleep of my life(i slept like 6hrs.). This scared the crap out of me, how could I be fine after consuming so much. I swore off all that stuff that day. Ecept for communion on sundays and the VERY occasional glass of wine , Like ounce a year. The only things I got to kick know are caffine and bad carbohydrates.

HOwever, being 19 in a state were drinking is the norm. I am like a lepper. People always ask me why I dont drink. IT is annoying as hell.

P.S. The drinking age for the State is 21. So the fact I am 19 and go into pubs and am asked why I dont drink should give you an idea of how socially acceptable drinking is here.

I drank waaaaay too much last term, there was on stage where I think I was constantly drunk, so I've been trying not to so much this term. So far, so good.

giantham, don't worry about it, I am still asked by friends, why don't I have something to drink, and to go get a drink, as I am 30.

but at the end of the day, I would much rather the money, plus the fact that my body can't tollerate drinking more than once in a "blue moon"

in the UK it is the norm for 14 year olds to goto the night clubs, so I wouldn't let that stop you if you really wanted to!

blimme, my brother was saying about his friend chatting up the owner of a pub for 2 or so years, and then his parents decided to celerbrate his 18th birthday in the same pub!! he nearly got killed for it though!

I thought they were even more into enforcing the law in the US, than they are in the UK.

Thanks Shadwell. I have another friend who doesnt drink and we hang out together. It just really rides my nerves some days. People just cant seem to get it in to thier head that some people do not drink.

I don't drink very much.

I like the occasional bottle of lager every so often ( Czechvar is my favourite-- it is much better than the swill that most Americans drink) or a good hefewiezen.

I also enjoy a glass of a decent pinot noir or cabernet with my meals.

People have told me that I have refined tastes for a college student; perhaps it's just that the prospect of going out and getting drunk doesn't appeal to me.

Czechvar - that's interesting, as it's called Budweiser Budvar over here (http://www.budvar.cz/en/index.html). Maybe the two Budweisers came to an agreement for brand name usage in the US. Certainly the Czech version tastes much superior to the American p*sswater.

(My 500th post - woohoo!)

I hope you aren't calling the normal budweiser american p*sswater Dan! as it is about the only drink I like on occassions!

I absolutely hate pints out of the taps! as that tastes more like it than bud!! and as long as the bud stays in sealed containers! then there is less chance of someone tampering with it!!

much rather out of date bud, that going for a pint out of the tap!! even council pop is better than that stuff!!

Hi,

I enjoy a night on the tiles and having a good drink! I don't do it often so when I do i really enjoy myself. I try not to get wasted though, I hate being so drunk that i dont know what i am doing and i dont really like hangovers.
sometimes we go to the pub after work and i'll have a few, mainly on a friday when it's pay day!
i also respect other peoples decision not to drink, it's up to the individual. sometimes when i've been drunk i wake in the morning and say 'i am NEVER drinking again', lol.

Maybe, but the elegance of the idea is in who funds it.

A soft drink reduction all year round would pretty much pretty much have to be funded by the bars themselves. If the reduction (to free) is specifically for designated drivers then car insurance people are willing to foot the bill because it's cheaper than paying for the number of cars that get totalled otherwise :P

even a 50% reduction in soft drinks would be something, as then the driver doesn't have to pay more than it would cost for a pint, and even that would reduce the number of people thinking it is safe to drink 1 or 2 pints, which can still have the same effect as someone just over the limit.

the best way to be is no drinks and driving, saying that though, I go to a pub, drink soft drinks for the night, but because of the music volume of the kareoke, then I still feel like I have had a few pints, even though I am totally sobber!

I must admit to liking alcohol. 8-[ I went through a stage a few years ago, where I would drink every night. I'd drink anything I could get hold of, including whisky. It used to relax me a lot when I felt stresssed or bored.

More recently, my alcohol consumption has decreased somewhat, but I still do drink on weekends and sometimes on weekdays. I never drink in public (not that I go out much!!!), but I find a bottle of wine relaxes me when I'm in my bedroom and I've had a long, stressful and tiring week. O:) I find it makes me feel more 'normal' again, and I do experience a biref period of elation. It does help to quell any feelings of loneliness or frustration, at least for a while. O:)
