Hi Everyone

I am Sm0k3yCresc3nT and I was diagnosed with Dyslexia with slow speed of information processing and other dyspraxia symptoms.

Now I have been working on trying to get a referral for a Dyspraxia assessment because although my diagnostic report for my Dyslexia points to "symptoms" it doesn't fully state I have dyspraxia. I would really like to know how as an adult to get an assessment in the UK.

I only ask because as I'm 37 and I'm getting older I notice some of the dyspraxia "symptoms are worse than I thought, to the point that they effect me at work. And I recently just lost my job over it.

Any advice from an adult looking for an official assessment?

Welcome to the Forum and sorry to hear of the loss of your job. If you have Dyslexia, it's quite possible you could be dyspraxic too.

While Dyspraxia is Neurological in cause, screening is regrettably not seen as a priority by Healthcare providers, though that's short-sighted. Similarly I do wonder if the value of having the certainty of a diagnosis/confirmation is very often under-valued. While there is no treatment knowing gives us certainty and acceptance and we might be less inclined to believe we might just be lazy, stupid, useless etc. We are absolutely not!

So often dyspraxia diagnostic criteria is boiled down to just difficulties with fine and gross motor coordination, though it affects more than just that.
Private Assessments are expensive though there may be options to save you having to fund out of your own pocket. Have you accepted your termination of employment or is it something you plan to appeal?, in which case you might want to explore possibility of seeking an Employment Tribunal?

If the answer to either of the above is yes, it might be worth raising the possibility that any under-performance was not deliberate, Did you declare dyslexia and did your employer make any adjustments to support your needs or was it a role where your dyslexia was not really a factor?
