Help

Post by Malla1970 »

I know this is an adult forum ,but i dont know where to turn to.My son was diagnosed with dyspraxia about 2 years ago,by our GP.Thats all was said ,no referral for help or any advice.I did inform school and they have only just assessed him.And obviously as we informed them he has dyspraxia. He has been issued with a tablet for his school work and finally extra time in his exams. So could anyone please point me in the right direction to get him any help he may need .Thankyou. Paul.

Hi Paul

Did you see a copy of the assessment the school carried out resulting in him getting the tablet and extra time? Have you spoken to his schools Special Educational Needs Coordinator?

What support do you believe he needs and what difficulties has he said he has?

Hi again Paul

That's entirely understandable though from what you've written the school are aware and he has been granted extra time. If at all possible and if he wants it I would suggest he has opportunity to sit exams in a smaller room without the distraction of everyone else leaving so he feels he is last even though he has legitimate extra time allowed.

That definitely helped me back then. I must admit Iwas a bit self-conscious about being allowed extra time. Encourage him to try new things and pursue interests that build self-reliance and confidence in his adaptability. We definitely have a tendency to compare ourselves unfairly to our peers so if you can help to temper that too.
