Mercury and Dyspraxia

Post by Animal lover »

Hi,

Does anyone know anything about the effects of mercury associated with neurological disabilities? I'm currently trying to do some research into mercury poisoning and how it can affect the foetus during pregnancy, but I am only finding small snippets of information. So after looking into it, i have found that consuming lots of tuna during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, can cause all kinds of problems in brain development. I don't know how true any of it is and i wondered if anyone can shed some light on this? (obviously I know we dont know for sure what causes dyspraxia) but i just find this subject fascinating and wanted to see if more women should know about this. This lady Julie Obradovic has produced this http://www.ageofautism.com/2010/08/merc ... -more.html

Any thoughts?
Thank you in advance.

Fish is beyond compare as a source of many nutrients vital to the developing infant, some of which may actually enhance development of the nervous system in babies and young children.
Widespread contamination of fish with toxic mercury, however, has cast a shadow over the nutritional benefits of fish.
Exposure to mercury in the womb can cause learning deficits, delay the mental development of children, and cause other neurological problems. Mercury consumed by a pregnant woman through contaminated fish can cross her placenta to damage the brain of her baby.
As a National Academy of Sciences panel definitively warned last year, some children exposed in utero by their mothers' fish consumption are at risk of falling in the group of children "who have to struggle to keep up in school and who might require remedial classes of special education."

Pregnant women who eat fish don’t just risk their own health—they also jeopardize the health of their unborn baby.
PCBs, mercury, and other toxins found in fish can be passed on to nursing babies through a mother’s breast milk. Researchers from Wayne State University found that “women who regularly ate fish, even many years before becoming pregnant, were more likely to have babies who were sluggish at birth, had small head circumferences, and had developmental problems.”
The EPA estimates that 600,000 children born in 2000 are at risk for lower intelligence and learning difficulties each year because of mercury exposure because their pregnant or nursing mothers ate fish.40 Even low levels of mercury in a mother’s blood can cause her child to have developmental problems.
Mothers who eat fish during pregnancy may also seriously damage their baby’s brain and nervous system. Studies have shown that children born to mothers who ate a lot of fish were slower to talk, walk, and develop fine motor skills and have weaker memories and attention spans.

Just a bit more research I found, in case anybody has stumbled upon this post. Scary really.

There's risk inherent in all kinds of things and you need to be careful of hidden agendas where risks may be overstated to make people take notice but be unbalanced and overlook potential benefits.

yes I get what you mean, there are lots of risks with all kinds of things, like having fillings removed and such. It was the article that made me wonder whether more women should be made aware about mercury. I guess there is no definitive answer to why dyspraxia occurs, but this research has been interesting :)
