Hi everyone from a learner driver (:

Hi all,

I'm a mother and psychology student and am almost qualified as a psychologist now (much to my surprise)..

I've always been a bit clumsy and uncoordinated but didn't realise that there was a name for what was going on for me until I did a module on cognitive psychology and read through a case study of someone with dyspraxia. As I was reading through, I realised that I could have written exactly what the author was describing and started wondering.
I scoured the internet for articles and information before calling my university to see what they could do for me. I don't learn very well from just reading through a book so I'd been struggling for a while. My uni agreed to send me some audio books to see if they would be helpful to me and they also suggested that I go for an assessment which they would pay for if I used one of their recommended assessors.
So, I did exactly that and to my surprise I walked out of the assessment with both dyspraxia and dyslexia.

Anyway, I've always known that my spatial awareness isn't the best (repeatedly breaking toes and bumping into doorframes kind of gives you a clue ;) ) so I never even attempted to learn to drive until this year.
I'm a complete natural and my instructor has been great. I've had 10 one hour lessons and apparently i'm ready for my test
I do need to be super careful with my spatial awareness (especially with the left hand side of the car, I have a habit of getting a little close to parked cars), but my instructor has worked with people with dyspraxia before and has taught me how to use reference points on the car as a way of telling where I should be (the bump on the windscreen wiper etc).

So, from me to everyone here, Hi Driver

Hi and welcome

If you're able to, please can you share an explanation or tips on how using reference points works, it would likely be interesting, and helpful to people who are trying to learn with less enlightened driving instructors. Please could you stick it somewhere in transport. Feel free to either start a new thread there or reply to an existing one.

Thank you

Thanks for the welcome,

I'll write down some of the reference points over the next couple of days and also find some youtube videos to link to that I found really helpful for myself. I'll wander down to transport and see which thread it will fit best into (or create a new one).

Hope you're having a great day (:
