Hello to you, and you, and you...

Post by realitybytes16 »

Well hello :)

I'm a 22 year old Dyspraxic man, I was diagnosed at 5, but didn't fully understand about it until I was about 15-16 - since then I've come to understand that it has pretty much hounded me and held me back all my life, and is the main source of a majority of my problems.

I'm generally quite a cheerful and laid-back fellow, but there are times where this thing gets to me, and I get really quite angry or upset - I'm someone who feels both highs and lows in the extreme, so on a bad day, I just kind of retreat from the world, but still really wish I could talk to someone like-minded. Maybe this site is the answer.
On the flip side of that, if you catch me on a good day, I'll be so happy it'll probably become annoying very quickly :D

My main issues brought on by my Dyspraxia are:
  • Poor Co-ordination
    Poor Balance
    Poor organisational skills
Memory (funnily enough, I actually forgot to mention that and had to come back and edit it in...)
The first, third and last are the most irritating.

These issues (primarily the third and fourth) have recently cost me a job that I loved, and now my main concern is finding something that I can both enjoy, and do without getting fired for stupid issues my Dyspraxia brings on (I worked in a pub as bar staff for a month, and pretty much spent the whole month getting yelled at...)

I'm fervently hoping to make some new friends on here, and hopefully the experience will make a few of these things a little easier to bear :).

Hi Sam, welcome to the forum. I'm 30 and was diagnosed with Dyspraxia when I was 15. I like Coronation Street, Harry Potter, reading and cats.

Hi Sam

Welcome! I hope you find the site useful and you're able to draw some useful inspiration about where to go and what to do next.

Finding an employer who is patient and willing to give you a proper chance in order that they can find and unlock your potential as a reliable and loyal employee seems to be half the battle. Plenty of examples in the Work section of this forum.

This is spot on, although I have to admit my boss in my old job was absolutely amazing about my dyspraxia; that wasn't so much the issue here, it was more that while I was very good at many aspects of the job, I wasn't very good at some of the more essential, 'admin' aspects.
My boss actually gave me many opportunities there that were intended to bring my skills up to speed (hence why I was there 3 years, it was on-and-off). It's just a shame that I never quite made it :(.

The thing that scares me now is the thought that a new employer (when I finally find one) might not be so forgiving about it.

I did have an interview for a games tester job recently, and based on the interview, I genuinely feel like it's something I might actually be able to do, not to mention it would be a window into the games industry (I'm currently on a course in games design). I haven't heard from them for four days though (the interview was last Friday), so I don't know what my chances are there. :S

Im 28 and i manage a house for supported living. I have been a support worker for 10 years and have founf that generally if you work in healthcare or similar industries they are understanding of your condition.
I too am dyspraxic and find great difficulty in performing various tasks but if you allocate yourself enough time and keep calm you can conquer most aspects, learning your own methods is a must (for me at least) as conventional methods dont seem to work with me.
Good luck with your search for employment, my advice is look into becoming a support worker because you can learn alot from others and they can learn alot from you

Thanks for the advice - to tell you the truth, I was a support worker in my last job :D I worked in a Day Centre for disabled people, and loved every moment of it. I've been volunteering a day a week since I left :).
The reason I left is pretty much what I said above - while my boss was amazing about it, there were things that I just couldn't get better at, and that cost me the job in the end.
If I'm honest, now that I'm out of it, I'm not sure I'd want to work in care again - at least not immediately. It's amazing and rewarding, but I do have other ambitions ^^.

One of which is games design, which I may now have a window into because I've actually been accepted into the games tester role I mentioned in my last post, so things are certainly looking up :).
