No support for adults with learning disorders

Hi I am new to this forum , I am 28 , and have never been officially diagnosed, but diagnosed myself from research over the internet and then had a so-called professional (who i paid good money to see) tell me i might have the condition after i hand feed him all the symptoms of the condition which matched up with me. I felt like i should be in his seat getting paid the big bucks after all the help he gave me, especially after he asked me to have further appointments with him where i would have had to fork out more money for more questionable results. Anyway that was about four years ago now and was as far as i took my search for help. It just seems to me that the only way of getting help for these conditions is as a child by causing enough of a disruption in class for some teacher to think "something needs to be done about this kid". Unfortunately i didn't quite put myself in this category, though i always knew i was not quite normal and struggled just to get results that were average at best. Anyway i am no longer looking for help and have decided to just try and accept the condition for what it is but after stumbling upon this forum couldn't resist having a bit of a rant about how i see things stand for adults trying to find help for learning disorders in general but particularly this one as it still doesn't seem to have the public awareness that conditions such as dyslexia or attention deficit has. Anyway enough of my rant, it would be great to hear anyone elses thought on this topic.

Assessment as an adult is hit and miss! I fund out I was dyspraxic from an ed psychologist with what was then the dyslexia institute, as an OT I have seen ITs do excellent assessments and really bad ones, so if you go NHS its the luck of the draw and if you go private I would ask about experience of assessing specific LDS and especially dyspraxia or better yet get a recommendation.

PS the other way to get a diagnosis is to have a parent concerned enough to push for or pay for a diagnosis, that`s what I did for my daughter who with the right support has flourished.
