An Introduction

Post by desertboy »

I would like to introduce myself.

I am almost 47 years old. I was only diagnosed at the age of 38. I am now working overseas as a teacher of English as a foreign language.

I had always known that something was wrong with me. Even my peers at primary school to me, "How come you're clever but such a moron?"

I have an above average IQ, but I have never been able to hold down conventional office jobs despite trying my absolute hardest. Therefore, anyone who says that dyspraxia is not a real disability or it does not exist is simply talking through a hole in their head.

I have become somewhat grumpy over the years as a result of dyspraxia. But I hope I can make a positive contribution to this wonderful site.

Hello. I have just found this site, it is very enlightening to me. I am 42 Undiagnosed with Dyspraxia
But i seem to have symptoms from all the examples given.

I had a terrible time at school, i was in the first year to take GCSEs in 1988, as your are aware
Dyspraxia did not exist (OR WAS NOT UNDERSTOOD) the school would not let me take any exams
due to being deemed unable or (Thick) . I would for instance blow the wrong way up (Ink Pens)
and instead of making Ink on a piece of ,paper would end up with ink all over my face this of
course just made my isolation at school worse. I would just sit in the classroom totally bewildered
by what was going on and the whole experience was a battle from the first moment of the day to the
last , the only way i got through it was to blank out everything around me. Finally my parents took
me out of that school and placed me in to a small private school, where at least i was allowed to take
exams, i also managed to represent the county at 200 Metres and nearly made the national trials the
High school totally unaware of any ability i had in anything.

Over the years i have always found group situations very difficult , so ive created a kind of class clown persona.
This persona has allowed me the ability to at least join in with groups, i would be the one to do something stupid
to create a laugh because i find it very difficult to join in . It is particularly bad if it is a new group and i have not met any of them before, my eyes start wandering i start playing with my hands i don't really want to be there.
With the groups i know,i give off the impression of being an extrovert when infect i am very introverted and don't really want to be there, this is all part of my coping strategy.

I thought i would never be able to learn to drive, it took me 1 full year from 17-18 2 2hr lessons a week , i passed on my second attempt in an automatic, fearing i would never master a manual car after about 7 years driving automatics i took some lessons in a manual car and passed 2nd time there.

I seem to have similar symptoms to many on this site, but have never been diagnosed , people would say you cant have Dyspraxia because you can play football at a high standard ( CAN'T TIE SHOE LACES THOUGH) or you appear to be extrovert in character.
