I Need To Let Something off My chest

Post by jad101 »

Am I the only dyspraxic person who doesnt believe in there own ability?? i mean ive just recently graduated and i am looking at these long winded graduate scheme jobs and thinking... can i cope with them? for example i was filling out an application form for a job on tescos graduate scheme with my mum and we came to the bit about if you have any disabilities or learning difficulties. my mum said put no just due to the fact that "it would cause too much hassle" and questioned why i was applying for such a "complex" job i was gobsmacked im a graduate surely i am qualified for a graduate job??
I mean i could get a graduate job but then again the pressure of the job could get to me and the silly mistakes i could make due to my dyspraxic tendancies may hinder my progress in the graduate job. I feel like i have no ambition to work for anyone as i feel based of past experiences people wont understand my issues or give me the time to settle down.sometimes i feel i cannot get beyond a simple administration job without worrying about dyspraxia.
if it was upto me i would travel the world working in bars all year stress free doing a job i am more than capable doing. I mean i have the ability to exceed in the workplace but in the back of my mind i always have a slight anxiousness that my dyspaxia will hinder my progress as stupid as it sounds.

I think the real question is In your own opinion, was it something you felt was too complex?

No disrespect to your Mum. It's nice of her to take an interest and to help and encourage you in applying for jobs but equally it needs to be you who ultimately decides which jobs you apply for and the way in which you go about doing so. By all means take advice from others but do ensure it is your application.

Try not to let your previous bad experiences negatively affect your view of potential improvement. Be upfront in your analysis of where you need to develop but focus first on what you can do/have done well and what you have learnt in a positive sense from instances where you feel you could have done/approached something in a different way to achieve the desired result.

Must say I'm still unsure of the declaration of disability question, though I do believe Tesco as an organisation are fairly enlightened about these things. Have a look at their website and make your own decision.

The whole going up against other people for selection as an a able candidate is still something I hate but it's a case of using our determination to prove we are just as good, if not better than others, if given the chance.

All the best!

I'm on the Tesco graduate scheme and they're better than most at understanding disability issues- give it a go, you'll never know if you don't try.

Go for the job :) You graduated from uni and they are more likely to take you on than a school/college/uni dropout
