Dyspraxia and Fibromyalgia

Post by annep.hope »

Hi everyone, I have two children with dyspraxia and then realized that I am also dyspraxic. I was diagnosed in 2006 with Fibromyalgia and in researching dyspraxia and fibro I see a lot of things in common. Is there anyone out there who has been officially diagosed with both conditions? I am wondering when scientist will begin to see the corelation between these two syndromes as they both dramatically affect your quality of life.

Hi Anne. It's interesting, I've noticed Fibromyalgia and ME seem to be more common among people with dyspraxia but don't know if there really is a connection between the two or if it just appears that way. I go on
general disability messageboards and some people may just have more than one condition by chance. One theory might be that people with dyspraxia are more prone to burnout because everything is more tiring and our nervous systems are less able to cope with stress. The trouble is not alot of research has been done on dyspraxia, it gets ignored big time by scientists and other professionals and invisible illnesses so often aren't taken seriously either. Hope you find the info you're looking for.

That is a valid point as I always get flu, chest infections and basically anything viral or gastro and it takes me ages to get rid of it completely and i am slightly worried as i already have a chronic digestive problem at the moment and i read that getting a flu with the digestive problem can develop into other conditions. They have been days i haven't been able to walk straight without being in so much pain.

Appreciate this is an old thread but I was diagnosed with Dyspraxia in Jan 2010 and Fibromyalgia in Jan 2011 although it was known by Oct 2010 that I had it, I just had to wait for tests to make sure it wasn't Lupus.

I know a few people on my fibro board who also have Dyspraxia or Aspergers/ADHD/ASD. Some also have ME as well.

I find a lot of the effects of fibro are similar - sensitivity to noise, touch, taste/short term memory loss/balance etc so it doesn't suprise me that the two can go hand in hand. Apparently Fibro is increasingly thought of as neurological rather than rheumatological as it's believed the brain sends out too many pain signals to the body. Makes sense to me that if you already have a problem with your brains messaging system through Dyspraxia/ASD etc it would increase the likelihood of developing something like fibro. I also have mild hypermobility, my thumbs can touch my arms, my hands lie flat on floor with knees straight and I can touch all my back with my hands. Hypermobility and Fibro are a common combo, as are hypermobility and dyspraxia so again, another connection.
Dyspraxia - Dx Jan 2010, borderline ASD as well plus strong Dyscalculia overlap.

Fibromyalgia - Dx Jan 2011.
Hypermobility - Dx April 2011
Willis-Ekbom Disease - Dx November 2011

I also have Eczema, Rosacea and Trichitollomania. Oh joy :)

I am waiting for confirmation of Dyspraxia although I am certain I have it and I have just found out that I have had ME for several years now which explains why illnesses lay me low for so long

I have Raynauds as well and I'm photosensitive. My sister has ME and because I get so tired I'm always trying to recharge my batteris in case the two are connected. They were trying say that there was an increased chance of Lupus as well. I'd say it's all of the above.

hi, i was diagnosed with dyspraxia when i was around 15, took along time to get a diagnosis as no one seemed to take me seriously. last year i was diagnosed with joint hypermobility syndrome and at the time the specialist mentioned fibromyalgia but it was never mentioned again. i have seen a number of specilists with the varoius problems i have and they have all said that they are unrelated to the joint hypermobility syndrome, i have been looking at the fibromyalgia symptoms and seem to have alot of them. i have another appointment with a specialist to talk to her about this so will see if i finally get a diagnosis

I was diagnosed with M.E. last year, looking at the Fibromyalgia symptoms I feel I'm closer to this than M.E. (My specialist says that the conditions tend to overlap so he personally doesn't worry too much about clear definition between the two). As I'm certain I have dyspraxia I would be very interested to know if there is a link between the two. It would make sense really, as I commented on another board, the effort in just avoiding hurting yourself, interacting with others day after day etc, is tiring and probably makes us more susceptible to full blown M.E./Fibromyalgia with all the pain etc.
